Geboren im Jahr 1900, studierte Gadamer u. a. bei Paul Natorp und Martin Heidegger. Er unterrichtete seit 1937 an den Universitäten in Marburg, Leipzig und Frankfurt. 1949 wurde er Nachfolger von Karl Jaspers in Heidelberg, wo er, 102-jährig, im Jahr 2002 starb.
