Der kleine Junge Pip, eine Vollwaise, wird von seiner älteren Schwester und deren Mann in bescheidenen Verhältnissen aufgezogen. Dies ändert sich, nachdem er auf dem Friedhof dem entflohenen Häftling Magwitch begegnet und diesen von seinen Ketten befreit. Er lernt die exzentrische Miss Havisham kennen, die, von den Männern enttäuscht, ihre Pflegetochter Estella zu einem lieblosen Wesen erzogen hat. Pip verliebt sich dennoch in Estella und träumt davon, ein Gentleman zu werden. Ein unbekannter Gönner ermöglicht Pip seinen Traum zu erfüllen: Er ermöglichte ihm eine vornehme Erziehung und stellte ihm ein großes Vermögen in Aussicht, so dass Pip nun vor allem mit Geldausgeben beschäftigt ist und das Leben eines Snobs führt. Doch bald schon werden seine großen Erwartungen zerschlagen.
