Als in einem Zimmer ein blutverschmierter Hammer gefunden wird, scheint der Fall aufgeklärt, doch das Mädchen, das dort lebte, ist verschwunden. Ihm ist es gelungen, in einem Auto zu fliehen. Für die Polizei beginnt damit ein dramatischer Kampf gegen die Zeit, denn in dem Wagen saß ein kleines Kind. Das Auto wird kurze Zeit später in einem Fluss in der Nähe entdeckt, und die Mörderin gilt auf tragische Weise als überführt. Nur Kriminalkommissar Joona Linna ist skeptisch. Zu viele Fragen sind noch offen. Was war das Mordmotiv? Und warum wurde eines der Opfer so merkwürdig aufgebahrt?
