Publisher's Summary

There's a little shop on Blossom Street in Seattle called A Good Yarn. You go there to buy knitting supplies and patterns, and now it's offering a knitting class. The first lesson: how to knit a baby blanket.

For owner Lydia Hoffman, the shop represents her dream of beginning a new life free from the cancer that has ravaged her twice. A life that offers a chance at love, and maybe marriage.

Jacqueline Donovan is stuck in a marriage that has dwindled into an arrangement of separate rooms and separate lives. She disapproves of the woman married to her only son, but if she knits a baby blanket, she can at least pretend to like her pregnant daughter-in-law.

For Carol Girard, the baby blanket brings a message of hope as she and her husband make a final attempt at in vitro pregnancy.

And tense-looking Alix Townsend, that's Alix with an "i", is learning to knit her blanket for her court-ordered community service project.

Brought together by an age-old craft, these four women make unexpected discoveries, about themselves and each other. Discoveries that lead to love, to friendship and acceptance, to laughter and dreams.

What the Critics Say

"Clearly capturing each woman as she supports the others and searches for the answers to her own troubles, Emond outdoes herself in portraying counterculture proponent Alix....The warmth of Emond's voice so embodies the tenacious characters as to deliver a worthwhile story of change and hope." "Shop on Blossom Street"

I have read this book in print before. But, the abridgment takes away a lot. If the full book were here, I would give it four stars, but the abridgement rates only one star.

    Story
"Inspired me to take up a new craft"

I'm normally a slow reader but this story kept my attention and I wanted more. It also led to find my own local knitting group and started knitting. I've met great people and patronize a few of my local businesses.

    "Debbie Macombre..."

...has this way of bringing her characters to life in her writing. I love how I can plug in my earbuds and pretend to be in Seattle while I'm sweating it out on the treadmill in Georgia. Thank you for the endless hours of listening pleasure. Your books are music to my ears.

    Story
    "Comforting Story"
What made the experience of listening to The Shop on Blossom Street the most enjoyable?

I get to listen to my audiobooks during my commute to and from work. Listening to this story takes you to another place and makes you 'feel good'

What other book might you compare The Shop on Blossom Street to and why?

I would compare it to the proceeding 2 books that follow this book - I didn't listen to this series in sequential order. Otherwise I can't say it compares to any other book I have read.

What about Linda Emond’s performance did you like?

    She has a wonderful voice

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, when Tammy Lee after the birth of her daughter told Jacquelyn the babies name. It was very touching!

    Any additional comments?

When Lidia found out that the cancer had not recurred I could so much feel for her and her relief. Also the sister relationship between Margaret and Lidia was so interesting to hear how they grew closer and are now working together at the Yarn Shop.

What did you love best about The Shop on Blossom Street?

This series is really about love, renewal and finding a way to persevere no matter what.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to sit and listen to the whole book at once because I didn't want the flow of the story broken up.

    "Nice story of friendship..."

Easy listening; easy-to-follow plot. Fix a cup of coffee/tea and listen while you knit. (Note that knitting knowledge is not essential to enjoy this story!)

    "Enjoyable, lighthearted read"

I don't mind having a book that is a bit predictable since it is still interesting to read how it gets to its end.

Not everything in the novel was predictable, however. I really enjoyed the story and didn't want to stop listening. I was well entertained and that is one of the biggest reasons I read/listen to books.

    Story
    "Lovely story, awful narrator!"
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Shop on Blossom Street?

There were many. Very well written story.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator is always THE most important ingredient of an audiobook. This one almost failed miserably for me, however, the subject and storyline just about saved it. I'm glad I persevered.
    Very disappointed in the narrator.
However, I won't be getting anymore of the series, if this narrator runs through them.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Uplifting storyline despite covering difficult subjects.

    Any additional comments?

Very enjoyable story about real women and their lives. With another narrator, I would continue the series.
