As I saw my newborn baby’s face for the first time, I tried desperately to capture her face in my mind - to stamp it onto my eyelids. As she was taken from me, I knew I might never see my daughter again.
Thirty-seven years later... 'You were adopted'. Three short words and Sabina’s life fractures. There would forever be a before those words and an after.
Pregnant with her own child, Sabina can’t understand how a mother could abandon her daughter or why her parents have kept the past a secret. Determined to find the woman who gave her away, what she discovers will change everything, not just for Sabina but for the women who have loved her all these years.
From the best-selling author of Me Without You comes another touching, beautifully told story about the pain of separation and the enduring strength of love.

Mother of two boys, love listening to my audible books in the car on the way to work.
i loved the Australian places and accents.
The mother, you could feel her pain.
She did, loved the Australian accent
No, was good to catch up as it is based indirectly on history
Very good story about a painful time in history. It takes place in Australia but that is not the only place such things happened. Good character development. Good story. I've listened every available minute since I started the book.
enjoyed this very much. finished in one day. i was sad i was happy. narrarator was good. not boring or monotone at all
"The secret daughter"
As an adopted daughter, I found this beautifully and compassionately written from both sides.
"Good Good read."
Thank you kelly for a wonderful book with a happy ending. I loved it!
"decisions made with the best intentions."
enjoyed it. the title sort of gives the story away so not many surprises . heartwarming with twists and turns
as someone who is adopted and found my birth mother and father this book hit home on many accounts for me. mostly on ajar she would be like..why it happened. good story
I loved this story so much. I loved the characters and the way it was told. The narrator was wonderful! Can't wait to read more of her books.
She just went on and on chastising her adoptive parents and was too preoccupied with her feelings. I forwarded several chapters and she was still feeling sorry for herself. Could have told the whole story in just a few chapters.
Loved it. A Great read.
If I put the book down , I picked it up within minutes.
A story that immediately placed you in the midst of this triangle of "doing the right thing"
"A spectacular story that did happen!"
A wonderful account of the joys and heartbreak of parenting a child that two families lived through. Forced adoption in Australia and probably all over the world.
"Fabulous insight so well written"
Great character development.
My only personal observation is that I belueve this book sits on the fence but that's ok.
In reality we all know historically apologises were given by the government for the treatment of these girls. I really think that perhaps some people were treated over harshly in the book where as others were let off. Hmm I'm still mulling this all over, I felt it tried to reset abolish a level playing field which could not be achieved. This is not to say I didn't love this book!
I was enraptured from page one and every page to the end.
Absolutely first rate writing and fabulous narrator too
5 amazing stars.
"an amazing story"
I loved this story.
some times life just isn't as straight forward as we expect it should be. mistakes made by people of power in the past can take decades to be made right if ever that can at all.
be prepared to shed tears of sadness and happiness. settle in you may not want to put this book down until you are finished.
An excellent story could not put it down would listen to it over and over again. Narration was superb.
Would definitely recommend this book.
"the secret daughter"
A very very good read all so audio was great relax and listen thank you
Not normally the type of book i would buy but it was a really addictive read. The only downside was at the end the scape goat was not a carachter within the book. Which to me was a wasted chance for a bit of gasp shock horror! Vanessa Coffey's voice was absolutely perfect for this book.
"Failed to reach expectation"
Sabina, a pregnant 38 year old, discovers that she was adopted at birth, so sets out to discover how this came about, who her birth parents were and why these facts were hidden from her. I was expecting a strong emotional story but somehow it failed to reach expectation.
The story is told from the perspective of Sabina, her adoptive mother Megan and her birth mother Lily but none of the characters showed any real depth or expressed strong feeling about the events leading up to the adoption. Although well written and a potentially good storyline, for me it became tedious and cringe worthy. Just not a page turner!
