Port Royal, Jamaica 1692
Living in a city deemed the wickedest in the world is no easy task for Miss Juliana Dutton. To make matters worse, with an ailing father and a drunken fool for a brother, she is forced to take over the running of the family business in order to survive. When a nosey suitor threatens everything, she spurns him and instead becomes engaged to the town idiot, Lord Munthrope. But is he an idiot? The more her problems push her closer to the man, the more she realizes he is not who he seems.
Alexander Hyde, the Pirate Earl, is the most feared pirate in the Caribbean - feared, successful, wealthy, handsome, and bored, so terribly bored. When an unexpected event allows him to get close to Juliana, a woman he has loved from afar for years, he takes it. But leading a double life causes more problems than it's worth. A restless crew and a long-time enemy out to capture and hang Alex, put Juliana in grave danger.
As tremors rock the city of Port Royal, Juliana's faith in God is equally shaken. Not only have things gotten worse, but she is confused by her feelings for both Munthrope and the Pirate Earl. Deception, intrigue, mutiny, death, betrayal, all attempt to tear the lovers apart. But the final blow comes when a massive earthquake strikes the city and threatens to sink it into the sea.

"Inspirational Pirate Romance - YES!"
I love pirates, and clean, engaging historical romance stories. This is a perfect blend! I read this a few years ago, and recently downloaded it on audible. This book kept my imagination busy and happy while I mowed the lawn, cleaned the kitchen and caught up on laundry. I've never enjoyed housework so much :)
I just couldn't quit listening to this audiobook! The author has a very unique way of pulling you into the story and keeping you riveted to what will happen next!
I love this book, as well as all of Marylu Tyndall's books. The reader does a great job! Please make more of your books into audio books! I would love to hear some of her older book series in audio!
"When is a pirate not a pirate"
The Ransom, written by MaryLu Tyndall is fourth in the series Legacy of the King's Pirates, although it is easily a stand alone book. Tyndall tells a great pirate story. Set in Jamaica of the 1690s, there is action, intrigue and romance enough to keep the pages turning (or in this reader's case, keep the audiobook running!). Heroine Juliana Dutton is desperately trying to hold her life together--a dying father who has withheld his love to Juliana, a dissolute brother who is a gambling souse and a shipping business that may end up tanking despite her determined efforts to secretly keep it afloat.
Can she keep control of her life? Will she end up like her friend, destitute and fending for herself in the foul taverns down by the docks? Throw into this stressful environment pursuit by a loathsome Naval captain and a foppish Lord, neither one the ideal mate but what's a girl to do? Then the Pirate Earl rescues her and the adventures begin. Tyndall tells a tale of secrets, mystery, pirate ship chases and battles, earthquakes and ensuing tsunamis that change lives forever. The characters are believable, and you either like them or you don't! The history of The Ransom is a great story in and of itself and seeing it through these fictional characters is fantastic. Throughout the story, the author has woven a thread of faith in God and what it means--it is a gift and no matter how much good you do, you cannot earn His favor. Fiona Hardingham does a great job of narration on the audiobook, giving each of the individuals a unique voice. Her voice is easy to listen to and makes the listening experience a pleasant one.
This action-packed story with its twists and turns is a great read for those who love a good pirate story!
I received an audio copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
"So Swashbuckling Good!"
Excellent book and the narration brought the pirates life on the high seas to life! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book! It has adventure, mystery and romance! I highly recommend it! *I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review which I have given.
"Second book as good as the third."
Yes, I have been listening to this series backwards. And yes, despite my accidental eccentricity, I still enjoyed this book a great deal. I also found the narrator, Fiona Hardingham, delightful to the ear. Nicely done Marylu Tyndall, and thank you for an intertaining pirate story, with hints of The Scarlet Pimpenel woven through its pages. I'll gladly take a listen to any of your other books.
"Original and Fun!"
Definitely one of my favorites!
Juliana was my favorite character, with Alex a second favorite.
I loved how caring Juliana was and how hard she worked to help others, keep things running for her family, etc. She did sometimes make bad decisions that put her in danger, but that is where some of my favorite moments with Alex came in as he worked to protect her in one way or the other.
Without giving a spoiler, I'll just say that the "big reveal" was my favorite part, along with some of the scenes that took place just after that.
Yes, however, I spread it out and listened to it mostly on commutes and during a few evenings.
This book comes before The Reckoning, but I read it after The Reckoning. I loved both books, but I liked the voice of Rowan better in The Reckoning than in The Ransom. However, seeing as how Rowan is a very exasperating person in The Ransom, his voice does make sense.
Narrator did a good job, using different voices and making the book humorous! Great story! Have enjoyed each book in this series!
"Marylu Tyndall at Her Best"
Ms. Tyndall holds back none of her special brand of storytelling. This is a swashbuckling tale sure to please those of us who love the batboy hero, and then the story is far more. It is a journey of the heart and the soul, uplifting and satisfying.
I have read several of M.L. Tyndall's books and I am never disappointed. I love this pirate series. It's packed full of adventure, romance and a swash buckling pirate or two! Don't miss out on this series!!!
