Publisher's Summary

Anne Neville and her sister Isabel are daughters of the most powerful magnate in 15th century England. Ever ruthless, always plotting, in the absence of a son and heir, Warwick sets about using his daughters as pawns in his political games.

Anne grows from a delightful child brought up at the court of Edward IV and his queen, Elizabeth Woodville, intimacy and friendship with the family of Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Her life is overturned when her father turns on his former allies, escapes England and invades with an enemy army. Widowed at 14, fatherless, with her mother locked in sanctuary, and her sister a vengeful enemy, Anne faces the world alone.

But fortune's wheel turns once again. Anne plots her escape from her sister's house, finds herself a husband in the handsome young Duke of Gloucester, and marries without permission, in secret. But danger still follows her. She finds that she has a mortal enemy in the most beautiful queen in England. Anne has to protect herself and her precious only son from the treacherous royal court, the deadly royal rival, and even from the driving ambition of her husband - Richard III.

    Story
"Best book of the series so far!"

I am not one for reviewing products but I felt this deserved one. I had listened to the Red Queen previously and thoroughly enjoyed it. I then listened to the White Queen which was ok but generally not of the same quality. I then read this and it blew them both out of the water (which if you read the book you will find to be an appropriate turn of phrase). The narration is equally as good as the other two (and it is very proficient) but the storyline is far superior. Granted Anne Neville herself was probably more interesting than the others. It's is gripping and at no point irritating like the other leading ladies could be in its counterparts. Also the ending to this piece feels to be concluded far more successfully than the other two. You feel like the story has ended and not that Philippa Gregory got bored of writing it. I would definitely recommend this to people with a love of the War of the Roses or just historical drama because this is it at its best.

    "Easy listening"

I really enjoyed this audio book. I had to listen to it in a rather fragmented way but it drew me back every time whether I had 5 minutes to listen or 50.

"a story proving greed is not a modern vice!"

as always Phillipa Gregory doesn't disappoint. Her characters have depth and purpose and the story flows without becoming boring despite almost 20 hours of listening. I have found that I now have a greater understanding and interest in the hiistory of our monarchy which despite its basis being in fiction isn't a bad thing and often find myself perusing the royal pedigree seeing who is related to whom... great story definitely worth the kisten
