Riley Hayes, the playboy of the Hayes family, is a young man who seems to have it all: money, a career he loves, and his pick of beautiful women. His father, CEO of HayesOil, passes control of the corporation to his two sons; but a stipulation is attached to Riley's portion. Concerned about Riley's lack of maturity, his father requires that Riley 'marry and stay married for one year to someone he loves'.
Angered by the requirement, Riley seeks a means of bypassing his father's stipulation. Blackmailing Jack Campbell into marrying him for love suits Riley's purpose. There is no mention in his father's documents that the marriage had to be with a woman and Jack Campbell is the son of Riley Senior's arch rival. Win win.
Riley marries Jack and abruptly his entire world is turned inside out. Riley hadn't counted on the fact that Jack Campbell, quiet and unassuming rancher, is a force of nature in his own right.
This is a story of murder, deceit, the struggle for power, lust and love, the sprawling life of a rancher and the whirlwind existence of a playboy. But under and through it all, as Riley learns over the months, this is a tale about family and everything that that word means.

this story had it all! Love, betrayal, murder! loved the narrators deep sexy voice! was well writen. I've read the book years ago and loved that as well!
"Don't judge a book by its description!"
I had seen this book in my reccomended list for quite a while and just wasn't that interested in the description. I hate books where the Mc is a d0uche, for lack of a better term, and the other Mc still falls in love with him and/or stays with him and that's exactly what this sounded like. Boy was I wrong! Yes Riley is flawed, but there are reasons behind what he does, and you may want to smack him upside the head sometimes but he never makes you dislike him. From the beginning you're rooting for him to break away from his family and be his own man and to fall for Jack. A great book with an unpredictable story line that keeps you guessing throughout.
The author pulls you into the lives of the characters. The narration was great as well. I can see myself reading this again.
"Sean Crisden is absolutely wonderful!"
If you like the forced marriage trope, coupled with high drama, family politics, old feuds, murder mysteries, lots of plot twists and turns, and really entertaining narration then look no farther - The Heart of Texas has it all!
This is the quintessential feuding families high drama soap opera story. It's absolutely scandalous!
Sean Crisden is absolutely wonderful! He brings Jack's Texas drawl and growling tones, and Riley's upper crust and more subtle tones, to life as well as doing a great job with the various feminine voices of the story. I enjoyed his timing, pacing, and the way he navigated the different dramatics of the material.
Sean Crisden’s honeyed and mellifluous tones kept me entertained, involved, and waiting for the next dramatic moment. I’ll definitely continue with the series, especially if Sean Crisden continues to narrate it!
"Western soap opera mystery killer"
Two gay couples on a farm with oil business fight to see who gets whom in love while trying to keep it on the down low.
"One of Seven Great Books!"
I bought his Audible book based upon Audible recommendation and the teaser. The story was brought to life by the narration. I enjoyed it so much I bought the next six books in the series and devoured them all! Great writing.
The narration gives me a totally different impression of the characters than the book cover shows. Riley (blond) is less boyish, and Jack (dark hair) is much more rugged. The Sean brings them to life in a way you don't get with the cover visual. You'll totally fall in love with Riley and Jack and the rest of the Campbell's and Hayse's.
Parts of this book made me cry, but in a good way. Sometimes things work out, and you just have to sob with joy.
BUY! THIS! BOOK!
"This story was better than I expected."
This story was way more intricate than i expected. It was a great suprise. The development of the story was great and I loved the main charactera.
Fantastic job in narration. Story and series is great.
Worthy entertainment. Eastern and modern together
"Entertaining like it should be"
I did enjoy this audio and was indeed drawn by the fact that Sean Crisden was narrating. The story was entertaining and if your like me you are listening in audio form because you are trying to do other things at the same time. Our two main characters were deep enough and the chemistry was there and it's sexy. I really liked the family aspect of the book as well, good job RJ Scott. I will be listening again and look forward to next book in series.
"This was a difficult book at times "
It all was good and I will most likely buy the next in this series, but there is a great deal of behavior, by some of the characters, that made this a difficult story to listen to at times.
"Heart of Texas has my Heart"
Wonderful story of family drama and love that Sean Crisden narrated perfectly, doing justice to all the characters. I will definitely listen to this over and over again. Can't wait for more in the series.
I loved this series in book form. The setting, the characters and the turn of mystery and intrigue. Add in Sean Crisden's wonderful narrative and this becomes another must have firm favourite. Can't wait for the next instalment.
