Publisher's Summary

The second instalment in the best-selling Obernewtyn series.

Since their takeover of Obernewtyn, the secret community of Misfits has flourished, protected by their remoteness. Led by Elspeth Gordie, whose extraordinary powers set her apart even among her Misfit friends, an expedition sets out to rescue a powerful Misfit in a distant part of the Land.

Only she knows the enormity of their task. But for her there is yet another challenge, as she must fulfil her vow to find and dismantle the dormant death weapons left by the Beforetimers.

One of my favourite books

This was the first Isobelle Carmody book I ever read as a teenager (not realising that it was the second book in a series). The struggles of the misifts and the odd and problematic Elspeth was a character I really connected to. So nice to listen to this, read by Isobelle Carmody herself. I am trying to collect the whole set so I have something great to read on the way to work every day. :)

LOVE IT!

I have so enjoyed returning to my childhood favourite, and listening to the story I loved so well read by its creator herself- what a blessing!

Fantastic Listen

Isabelle Carmody not only captures the characters of the people she writes about, but the voices too. This is an entertaining audiobook, I like her "highlander" accents. I'm enjoying the story of Obernewtyn immensely

Threats loom

Back to Obernewtyn with a new master, Rushton, and guilds. Lots more action in this book. Plot thickens. Threats and machines, evil Herders, Ariel, and the council all are all looming and must be dealt with. Elspeth finds Dragon- an interesting character.

Always been one of my faves in the series

Wonderful performance of the story. I've always loved this book of the series and the audiobook version is just as magic.

can't get through this book.

didn't much get into the first book either but struggled through and as it came highly recommended by a friend I thought I'd try book two but am returning it. can't feel any link with the characters. not sure if it's the reader or the book...

Great storyline but characters and relationships lacking

I thought the storyline was great however the characters lack depth and relationships between characters are extremely superficial. For this reason I found it hard to really get into this book. On top of that, to me this series seems more like one book, split up into a series which of course ends up costing triple (I think there are three in the series??) the amount of money. The narrator was ok but a little monotone. I wont be buying book three.
