Publisher's Summary

Professionally, Dr. Alec Johnson has almost reached his goals. As this year's recipient of a humanitarian award with his ex, Dr. Tyler Hall, Alec's work with the homeless is about to be recognized. Unfortunately, his personal life sucks because now he has to attend several events alongside Tyler - with his ex's new boyfriend in tow. In an attempt to lift his mood and break out of his rut, Alec purchases a motorcycle he has no idea how to start. Dylan Booth doesn't have time for Dr. Clueless and his fickle 1964 Harley, but the cocky mechanic can't say no to the request for help.

Having spent his teen years on the streets, and losing his best friend to HIV, Dylan decides teaching the do-gooder how to ride is the least he can do. But watching Alec flounder in his ex's company throws Dylan into protector mode, and the confirmed hetero introduces himself as Alec's new boyfriend. But Dylan's a master bullshitter, and the phony PDA soon turns ultra-hot. Alec can't afford to get attached, and Dylan's learned everyone eventually leaves. Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel way too real...

Contains mature themes.

    "Exceptional story..."

When I first began this story, I just assumed it would be another "I'm not gay, but I like a dude" story. Boy howdy, not even remotely close. Alec and Dylan's journey is chock-full of humor, angst, confusion, hot sex, and delight...I just could not get enough. The narrator did an excellent job bringing these characters to life, which only enhanced the story. River Jaymes offered a different twist, virtually inventing another way of meeting someone. The first scene with Dylan and Alec in bed...phenomenal! I want to rush out and buy a Harley and a leather jacket...definitely recommend!

    "Great!"

The Backup Boyfriend is one of my favorite M/M books. I've read the book twice. I love the story and the characters. I was so excited to see it available on Audible. I've never listened to a book narrated by Mark Bachmann, so I was pleasantly surprised by the job he did. Good narration, fantastic story, I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys gay romances.

"Like the book but not the right narrator"
What made the experience of listening to The Backup Boyfriend the most enjoyable?

    Good story line

What didn’t you like about Marc Bachmann’s performance?

The narrator has a great voice and excellent diction but is not quite suited for this book.

    "Great story"

The writer pulls you into the story and has you actually caring about the characters.
The pace of the story builds you up to what's going to happen next.

    "Robotic Voice"
What did you like best about The Backup Boyfriend? What did you like least?

I love this story. Alec and Dylan are sweet and sexy all at the same time. And while I read this book a while ago, I got the audio to listen to in the car. I love listening to my favorites over and over again, but this narrator sounds like a machine or a computer is reading the lines. The words are choppy and there's no feeling. At times it sounds like the narrator is trying to give Alec a Brisith accent. I suggest you read the book first, you'll enjoy the story so much more.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His voice if robotic and little to no feeling.

    "Great story. So so narration"

I actually read this book myself a year or so ago and enjoyed it so much, i wanted the audio version as well. The story is fun and the sexy times are hot. The narrator though was a little over the top at times. I almost quit listening, but I was in the middle of a cleaning project and just never got around to it. It did finally grow on me enough to finish listening to the entire book. I think that may have more to do with the great story rather than the narration.

    "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! loved it!!!"
    Any additional comments?

You know when you just pick a book up and within the first few pages you click straight away? Well that's what happened to me with The Backup Boyfriend.
I loved how there's much more to Dylan the ' straight' guy. He doesn't actually believe in labeling himself as any sexual persuasion, even though its always been women he's been involved with, so he has no major troubles entering into a hot and steamy relationship with Alec when he offers to be his ' backup boyfriend ' for one night, all because poor Alec is struggling to get over the break up with his ex Travis. However, that's actually the trouble... he can do the sex — oh boy can he!!! — but giving himself fully to a committed relationship is a no no for Dylan and that's where the misunderstandings begin to fall between the two of them. Complete opposites but deeply drawn to each other, despite their differences and backgrounds, the chemistry between them is explosive. I'm still tingling over the garage scene... * shivers*

    "Very fun read"
Would you listen to The Backup Boyfriend again? Why?

No. But I very seldom listen to books a second time.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Backup Boyfriend?

I always enjoy reading about accomplished gay guys with relatively normal lives. Doctors, mechanics, etc...

Have you listened to any of Marc Bachmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Both books in this series

    Any additional comments?

Binge listened to it. (and the sequel) both were great fun.

    "Awesome Story, Horrible Performance"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Backup Boyfriend to be better than the print version?

The print version is so much better. He sounds like he is reading a dramatic story instead of a romance. I'm listening because I bought the audio, but I will prefer to just read the story.

"Great story with a great narrator."

I've listened to this one on long drives about 3 times now. Great m/m story with little angst and a lot of yummy scenes. Great story all the way through with an HEA for the mc's and a HFN for our side characters. Here's hoping this becomes a series.
