The great Norse myths are woven into the fabric of our storytelling - from Tolkien, Alan Garner and Rosemary Sutcliff to Game of Thrones and Marvel Comics. They are also an inspiration for Neil Gaiman's own award-bedecked, best-selling fiction. Now he reaches back through time to the original source stories in a thrilling and vivid rendition of the great Norse tales. Gaiman's gods are thoroughly alive - irascible, visceral, playful and passionate - and the tales carry us from the beginning of everything to Ragnarök and the twilight of the gods. Galvanised by Gaiman's prose, Thor, Loki, Odin and Freya are irresistible forces for modern listeners, and the crackling, brilliant writing demands to be heard around an open fire on a freezing, starlit night.

Not into reading but I love to listen !! Interested into world events and the future
Not a lot to really enthuse me.. All of it came across as bland and unchallenging..
Occasional dips into savagery did little to alter the banal repetition..
A fantastic retelling of Snorri's and the Poetic Edda. Gaiman has a voice like honey and breathes life into the mythology like the poets of old.
I will be revisiting these chapters again and again.
This is my first proper foray into Gaiman's work and it was thoroughly enjoyable and gripping! I love history and mythology, and the storytelling aspect of this book is quite unlike any other history or mythology book I've read or listened to. Even my wife enjoyed listening to it!
I have very little experience of the Norse myths and legends, so I have little to compare these retellings with. I really enjoyed them, you can tell that the author has enjoyed developing the stories and this shows in his narration. If you like the author you will not be disappointed. Will be especially pertinent to those that enjoyed American gods.
Neil, tells the stories of the Norse Gods with ease and in his own relaxed style that, in my opinion, bring the characters to life in a way that relates to now, its current..and I, for one absolutely loved it...I've read all the classic tomes on North Mythology, poetic Eddas, Sagas, quite heavy going for even the most dedicated seekers of the Nordic Deities ..!
I recommend pouring a large glass of mead, throwing a log on the fire, sitting back and be transported back to the world at it's very beginning with Ginnunganap, until its end with the coming of Ragnarok.
"A must listen"
A truly excellent retelling of these Norse sagas. Superbly narrated. Worthy of the Gods themselves.
"Amazing tales from the North"
I love the way that Neil Gaiman has updated the stories and made them accessible, whilst still being true to the originals.
Almost like a book of fairy tales, but for adults
Thor; I love the way he just wants to hit things with his hammer.
Watch out, the Gods are back...
I love anything by Neil Gaiman and this definitely does not disappoint.
Well consructed and narrated by Gaiman. Takes the old and makes them sound new. Very entertaining!
I really enjoyed this as did the family who listened to it on a long car trip.
kind of short. enjoyed the stories but as the writer said they are just bits and pieces. I would like something more fluent.
"Loved it for what it was."
loved it for what it was. I just feel like it needed to be more cohesive but that's more about the source Gaimens writing.
"Great stories, incredible adaptation. "
Of course Neil Gaiman is a great writer. But when he tells the story himself you can feel the personality of each character. I especially enjoyed the shift in Thor's tone from unintelligent and slightly playful to serious as the book progressed.
"Blood and ice and lots of mead!"
Great myths, so many so similar to other modern tales and yet so distinct and rowdy. Made me want to go back to Iceland!
