The Sunday Times best-selling author of The Gladiator and Brothers in Blood returns with another unpauseable, thrilling, and action-packed adventure.
The fierce courage of the men and women of the Greek Resistance is brought to vivid life in Sunday Times best seller Simon Scarrow's powerful new novel of World War II.
It's 1938. A perfect summer on the Greek island of Lefkas for three young people untroubled by the simmering politics of Europe. Peter, visiting from Germany while his father leads an archaeological dig, has become close friends with locals Andreas and Eleni. As the world slides towards conflict and Peter is forced to leave, they swear to meet again.
In 1942, Andreas and Eleni have joined the partisan forces resisting the German invasion. Peter has returned - now a dangerously well-informed enemy intelligence officer. A friendship formed in peace will turn into a desperate battle between enemies sworn to sacrifice everything for the countries that they love....

"Another gripping, historic tale."
Absolutely fabulous!! A superb narration that takes you into the story. Wonderful characters and a story that shows friendships can surmount any obstacle thrown in it's way. Simon Scarrow is far and away my favourite author - nothing he has written (that I have read so far) has let me down.
I really enjoy the authors books
This was a really good one set in world war 2 instead of ancient history.
"a break from the norm, but fantastic..."
I have read all of Mr Scarrows historical fiction, I love his characters and his pace. This was a change in era vastly different from his usual, but by 'eck he didn't disappoint.
A great story fantastically set in an amazing time. It is fast paced and gritty, it has romance and betrayal, fighting and greed.
I personally think this is one of his best books yet.
A must read for anyone.
"Another great listen from Simon Scarrow"
I was a little reluctant to change from listening to the Cato & Macro books but as I've listen to them all so far I had run out of books so decided to give this one ago and I am so glad I did. It's a great story which is narrated brilliantly (again) by Jonathan Keeble. I won't spoil the story here for you and would readily encourage you to read it for yourself.
"Scarrow at his best, again!"
A great story, well read and sucks you in from the very start. Scarrow Cato and Macro books are fantastic so I chose this to have a break from the Roman era and this quenched the thurst! Must listen
"Nazis and Greek Resistance - passable drama"
I wanted to love this because I really enjoy World War Two historic novels and I don't know much about the Greek campaign. Unfortunately the novel just isn't that good. There's a plot device which frames the historic story around a modern day one. I found this irritating and unnecessary.
So, in the past we have 3 children as friends -two Greek and a German running around a Greek island. Then war happens. By this time the children are grown and we follow their stories but it's just not that thrilling. Wouldn't it be a coincidence Elena & Andreas (Greeks) say, if Pieter (German) was posted on our island. This is how predictable the whole story was. Also irritatingly the author jumps in and out of character's heads at random which gets confusing.
In the present day you have Elena (now old) telling parts of her story to her granddaughter who is in correspondence with Pieter's grandson. This gives a reason for the story being told but the present day narrative all fizzles into nothing.
The narration was good and I like to think this novel was well researched and that I at least learnt something about the Greek campaign but really this isn't a romance or thriller just a placid drama.
It has got everything...action,pace,really interesting list of charactets.rattling good story.....i did not want it to end
"War can make forgiveness seem impossible"
An interesting story and the narration was excellent except for the incorrect pronunciation of some of Greek names, which was very irritating.
