About this listen

Gotham tells of the encounter between music journalist Jeff Foster and 'boy pharaoh' Na$ti Boi. It reveals how hollow celebrities cast their spell. Think Bonfire of the Vanities, Tom Wolfe.

Nick Earls is the award-winning author of 12 novels and numerous shorter works. With the publication of the Word Hunters trilogy (Penguin 2012-2013), he is now officially also a children's writer.

A surprise, well written and well read. This is not a story I would normally go anywhere near! Enjoyed the insight into this shallow and degenerate world.

A contradiction A meaningful rap

The change of direction about 3/4 through this short story made it all make sense and also made it a very worthwhile way to spend 2 hours.

Currently free on Audible, as are the other novellas in the series. I read this one first simply because it was labelled as #1 - not yet sure whether reading order matters.

What a beautifully crafted story! Both evocative and emotive, and expertly performed by the awesome Rhys Muldoon.

Loved it!

I really wasn't sure about this at the start, why did I care about the indulgent life of a rap star or brat which is how he really comes across.

But when the beautiful Ariel came into the picture, the contrast was amazing, how lucky some people appear even when they dont come across as deserving compared to those innocents who can't seam to catch a break.

The joy portrayed in the park from both father and daughter was outstanding and the slide scene brought me to tears.

Really got me in the end

It's a moving coming together of culture, cultures and humanity in a pithy short story that has depth, breadth and almost squeezes out a palette of emotions from the reader by tale's end!

Builds slowly to a great story

Wonderful! Great humour and sensitivity to the different characters. I cried a bit at the end!

I've always appreciated Nick Earls for his patiently emotional style. I decided to listen to this without reading the blurb, and my only disappointment was that it had to eventually end.

Unexpected gem

Insightful, heartfelt. The Gotham of rappers and families and Batman. Excellent. The accents were perfect.
