Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Four Chinese women, drawn together by the shadow of their past, meet in San Francisco to play mah jong, invest in stocks, eat dim sum, and to "say" stories to each other. Story
Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, an earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Story
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Publisher's Summary
Reunite with Pearl and May from Shanghai Girls, and Pearl’s daughter Joy in the midst of China's Great Leap Forward. A continuation of the characters from her best seller Shanghai Girls.
Nineteen-year-old Joy Louie has run away from her home in 1950s America to start a new life in China. Idealistic and unafraid, she believes that Chairman Mao is on the side of the people, despite what her family keeps telling her.
Meanwhile, Pearl returns to China to bring Joy home - if she can. For Mao has launched his Great Leap Forward, and each passing season brings ever greater hardship. Pearl must use her contacts from her decadent childhood in 1930s Shanghai to find a way to safety - and a chance of joy for them both.

A journey through darkness
I greatly enjoyed finding out what happened to Joy after listening to the last book-club"Shanghai Girls" and I was not disappointed. The tale deepened my understanding of life in China in the 1950s including life in the collectives, the Great Leap Forward and the famine. It was an incredibly engaging tale!

Outstanding I account Most absorbing reading .
This was a riverting account of life for the ordinary people of the countryside in communist China during the great famines of the fifties. I was completely absorbed by the mother's love for her stubborn opinionated daughter. It was a tremendous story of loss & fulfilment with a nail biting climax.
