"Enjoyable - but not one of Mary Kay Andrews' best"

I have become a big Mary Kay Andrews fan, and while I enjoyed CHRISTMAS BLISS, I finished this latest effort with some measure of disappointment.

Weezie Foley and crew are definitely my favorite characters out of all of Andrews' excellent books, and I was very much looking forward to another installment. Andrews usually provides interesting twists and turns, sometimes to the point of pain, but I found CHRISTMAS BLISS entirely too predictable. I found myself seeing each twist's outcome pretty much as soon as it was introduced, and feeling disappointed that I was right. I was hoping for the unexpected, and I didn't find it in this tale. There were also scenes that seemed contrived, almost shoehorned into the story (trying to avoid spoilers here - but I will mention the party Merijoy Rucker threw for BeBe) and didn't seem to flow organically. It almost seemed as if some favorite old character needed a cameo, or that someone had told funny stories about such parties and it somehow needed to be fit in.

And to be honest, I just don't like this new narrator. I could have gotten used to the new voices, although they seemed too cutesy for the characters, particularly Weezie, if McInerney had just used the same pronunciations the previous narrator Isabel Keating had for consistency. Every time she said "BeeBee" instead of "BayBay", I found myself grinding my teeth -- also the change to the surname Stepanik. I almost didn't recognize the word when she said Buleigh. Perhaps these were the pronunciations the author had in mind, but when you have existing audiobooks in the same milieu, it seems logical to try to keep at least some consistency if you plan to change narrators.

Don't get me wrong -- CHRISTMAS BLISS was a fun listen, and well worth the money spent on it. It's just not a favorite. It would have been better if they'd gotten the original narrator for the audiobook, though it still doesn't address some of the predictability.

"Another enjoyable episode of Bebe & Weezy"

I love Mary Kay Andrews - always download one of her books when I want to listen to something that I can not only identify with and also that I know will make me laugh out loud.

    "Cozy Christmas tale"
What made the experience of listening to Christmas Bliss the most enjoyable?

I love the development of Weezy and BeBe and the way the story is told from each of their points of view.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Christmas Bliss?

New York at Christmas time is magical and this was captured in the book.

What about Kathleen McInerney’s performance did you like?

I've listened to so many MKA books and love this performer.

Who was the most memorable character of Christmas Bliss and why?

Weezy always steals the show but BeBe really was the most memorable in that she had the most transition and personal growth.

I kept waiting for it to get good. For a big problem or something. Nothing riveting. Cute read but just never really went anywhere.

    "Narration makes it a dissappointment"
Where does Christmas Bliss rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It ranks somewhere in the middle. I love the Weezie and Bebe series, however the narration for the series has been not that great since the first book. Susan Eriksen did a great job narrating Savannah Blues. The rest of the books narrators have only been "meh"

What other book might you compare Christmas Bliss to and why?

I like these books based on the location of the story. I enjoy these southern reads, Similar to the books by Jana DeLeon - not necessarily in story line, but the setting.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kathleen McInerney’s performances?

Potentially yes, but not in the Weezie Bebe series

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, because I was disappointed in the narration.

    Any additional comments?

Kathleen McInerney has a believable southern voice, but my issue with this narration is that nobody in editing appears to be paying attention to the story line in the first book. MKA clearly explains in the first book that "Bebe" is pronounced "BayBay" because she was the "BayBay" of her family. Every time I hear the narrator pronounce it "BeeBee" I cringe. It doesn't take much research to figure that out. I had the same issue with Isabella Keating from Savannah Breeze and Blue Christmas. Also, switching around the narrators for each book completely changes the interpretation of the characters. In the first book, Uncle James sounded like a fine, savvy, southern gentlemen. Kathleen McInerney makes him sound like a dunce. Also, Manny and Cookie - I did enjoy Isabella Keating's interpretation of their voices, and yet in this book, their characters are almost unrecognizable in KM's voice. One last thing, Savannah Breeze is about Bebe's relationship with her grandparents. KM pronounces the grandmother's name as "Grand Ma-Ma" like the British aristocracy, rather than a southern "Grand Mama". Again, seems like an amateur slip up. Just shows it helps to understand the context of the books you are narrating.

    "Sweet Merry Christmas Story"

Just a sweet romantic novel with no drama, no mystery, as if one was hanging out with 2 girlfriends one getting married and one having a baby.

    "Nothing interesting here."
If you’ve listened to books by Mary Kay Andrews before, how does this one compare?

Her earlier books are, by far, more interesting to listen to.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Voices were annoyingly cute and hard to distinguish from each other.

    "Cute story"

It was easy listening, somewhat more for younger readers such as 20's/30's. Basically a beach read but with the holiday theme. I don't regret using the credit as it passed the time quite nicely as I worked on Holiday decorating, baking, etc.

    "Bay Bay and Weezie!"

I like Mary Kay Andrews! Weezie is a great character and the things she encounters, very funny LOL I like sequels and her and Bay Bay or Be Be and great adventures together.

I love to listen to the antiques Weezie finds!! Although I prefer the original narrator for Mary Kay.
