"A sparkling and compelling mystery. Amy Snow captured our hearts from the very first page" (Richard & Judy)
Tracy Rees has written a lovely story of friendship, which she seamlessly links from past to present throughout the book. Her characters come to life and draw you in to Amy's story.
Certainly not a challenging book, but if you are looking for something easy and pleasant then this is the book - an ideal holiday book.
That said, I enjoyed my journey with Amy as she followed Aurelia's trail and discovered herself, and would probably try another of Rees books if/when she writes one.
Nicely narrated too.
I loved the strong female characters. Tracy Rees has done a magnificent job capturing the language and essence of the Victorian Period. It felt like a little bit of Jane Austen, Emily Bronte and Wilkie Collins all mixed into a fabulous plot line.
It had me gripped from the very first paragraph and stayed exciting all the way through.
She did a wonderful job. Lovely vocal tones and great diversity in characterisations, making it a pleasure to listen to.
I can't wait to purchase other books by this author.
Definitely a favorite! I wish we learned more about Amy throughout the story, but loved the thought process behind the journey she had to take. Tracey Rees is an amazing auther and I look forward to reading more and this one again!
"Captivating historical fiction"
Yes! The style is kind of a cross between Charles Dickens, Bronte sisters, and Jane Austen. It vividly evokes the Victorian era, and has nuanced and fascinating characters.
When Amy and Mrs. Riverthorpe come back from the ball and talk over wine.
No I had not, but I thought she did an excellent job - particularly with Aurelia and Mrs. Riverthorpe's voices.
When Amy gets to York and discovers the next part of the treasure hunt.
Although I absolutely loved the book, I felt like there could have been more romantic tension between Amy and Henry. I also didn't really care for the shift of perspective in the epilogue at the end.
"Could Not Be Better"
If you are seeking a read that is part Dickens, part Bronte, part Austen and yet totally original, then Amy Snow is THE novel for you. I don't recall historical fiction that so captivated me (and I have read a good deal of it). The writing is absolutely superb, the narration perfect for the author's brilliant words and the story kept me hungering for more and more. When I finished it, I immediately started to listen again - something I rarely do. But this is a very unique, cherished book in so many ways. Ms. Rees is to be congratulated on writing a novel that is now on my "Top Ten" list - of all times!
You have to be a fan of historical fiction to fully appreciate Amy Snow, but if you are, you will be thrilled if you listen to it. It will stay with you for a long time. It's a gem!
Followed the mystery avidly. Excellent narration.
Could have used more romance but guess that would have conflicted with point of storyline
"Austin-like and lovely"
If you like Austin, you'll love this - though it takes place 50 years earlier. I recommend listening at 1.25 speed as the narrator's cadence is a bit slow.
"Love this story!"
I really enjoyed listening to this story and would recommend it. The author did a wonderful job with character and setting description and the performance was terrific.
Beautifully written, mysterious and full of interesting characters, and well researched for historical details. Wish i could start over from the beginning
I loved all of it. Great book. Will recommend to everyone. Would be great to have a sequel.
I enjoyed this book with all it's secrets and complexities. The characters were well developed, keeping my interest.
Melody Grove reads beautifully with the exception of some of the male characters. It was at times difficult to distinguish which character was speaking with words of one person rolling into the dialogue of another creating confusion on my part and having to re-listen for clarification. I did find her voice very pleasant & enjoyable to listen to.
"This was a terrific book!"
I absolutely LOVED this book!! Well done. It was a fantastic novel... SO well written. And the narrator was perfect. I'm recommending this one to all my historical fiction-loving friends. A shame there aren't more audiobooks by this author. I'd listen to them all!
Well developed character.
I liked the characters- very strong women. The story was despite the plight of women- both rich and poor and in between- in England in the mid 1800's.
I am not sure but I love her voice. I think she could say anything and it would sound wonderful.
Yes. I was sad when it was over.
"Loved this book"
Amy Snow is a delightful book. I love being immersed in the history and the propriety of women of this age. The use of english in this time is exquisite, I wish we could still communicate so eloquently. Loved the way that the book unfolded taking Amy on many adventures. I chose it because the Richard and Judy recommendations are generally correct, with this one winning the 2014 Search for a Bestseller award, I was not disappointed. I read other genres but feel the need to jump back to this era for some refinement now and again.
"Enjoyable period drama"
Good story and I was kept interested with mystery and romance. Interesting characters and Amy was neither dull or higher sophisticated. Slightly predictable but enjoyable and great performance
Although I figured out the secret the story and how Amy grows and discovers herself was a joy to read can't wait for this authors next book
I enjoyed this story right to the end. It was quietly compulsive, with no murders, nevertheless I wanted the mystery solved.
a throughly enjoyable listen. learning about how life was in the victorain erz
I was hooked from the start.
This would make a wonderful film.
I wish we had heard more of what had become of Robin...
Stunningly good book. Gripping from the start. Narration is one of the best I've listened to. I finished this book so quickly as I just had to know 'what happens next'. I normally like factual or crime but this book has converted me. I will listen to it many times.
"Completely drawn in"
I was a bit dubious to being with as the narrator appeared to speak very slowly. However she is very clear and crisp and once I got my ear in I found that my initial impressions were wrong and I was infact drawn into the story even more.
Amy Snow is a unfortunate girl of the period who has many struggles and has many hardships. This is a great story of how she battles through and eventually triumphs. I was so drawn in that in places I was welling up and was so desperate for the story to ensure that Amy Snow was alright!
I don't often get completely consumed by a book, but this one had me! I often listen on my commute into work and found myself sitting outside not wanting to go in as I wanted to hear more!
"Favorite book so far!!!"
Yes because.it's such a compelling story!! Loved it!!! :D
Aurelia - she had spirit, courage, kindness and love :)
Calm, spellbinding voice that made one want to keep reading!!!
All, an emotional rollercoaster!
Would recommend to anyone wholeheartedly!! :)
