Legends aren't born. They're forged.
Dug Sealskinner is a down-on-his-luck mercenary travelling south to join up with King Zadar's army. But he keeps rescuing the wrong people. First, Spring, a child he finds scavenging on the battlefield, and then Lowa, one of Zadar's most fearsome warriors, who's vowed revenge on the king for her sister's execution.
Now Dug's on the wrong side of that thousands-strong army he hoped to join - and worse, Zadar has bloodthirsty druid magic on his side. All Dug has is his war hammer, one rescued child, and one unpredictable, highly-trained warrior with a lust for revenge that's going to get them all killed.... It's a glorious day to die.

Great book, and terrifically well-realized characters. Also quite funny in places which I greatly appreciated, but some of the violence is hard to listen to, particularly the various forms of torture described in great detail.
Great first installment by Angus Watson if you like action, comedy, sex and magic this has it all and Sean Barrett does a great job bringing characters to life.
Great story, well told with likeable characters. I also liked the thought of incorporating historical elements, that had been researched, into a fantasy yarn.
Doug!! Badger's balls!! Great phrases!!
Top of my list as a story teller! Brilliant voice for audio books!! I look for books narrated by this guy as an indicator of what might be a good story. Haven't been disappointed so far.
Absolutely - and it kept my attention throughout.
About to download the other two in the series.
Perfectly paced in my opinion; fast but without too many time leaps. Well made characters that I really felt for, it really got me questioning my own ethics at one point. Vivid environmental and event descriptions although not as extensive as mr. Tolkien but it's a way of keeping The pace up.
All in all a very well written book and I lool forward to The sequel.
If you're a fan of epic fantasy or historical fictions, give this one a try! Great plot and writing style with depth to the characters. Highly engaging and narration was very enjoyable.
Awesome first book of a trilogy, I can't wait to get the next one. Excellent narration, good humour, good story, characters I could invest in emotionally, I loved it from the first page to the last!
What a great story. I enjoyed every minute. The characters are 'real' characters! Sean Barrett does an exceptional reading. Highly recommend this to all epic fantasy lovers.
"Refreshing take on fantasy."
I'm a great lover of audible and thought the narration by Sean Barrett really good. I haven't read the printed version but generally i find if the narrator paired with the book is good then i feel it adds extra enjoyment over any printed book.
Dug was a brilliant character and to me instantly likable. I found him to be funny and although a lot of the time he tried to stay out of trouble invariably he became the heroic savior....also I've never heard so much Badger related profanity in my life! Brilliant stuff!
Without giving too much away probably the inn scene when Dug meets Lowa.
Again not trying to give too much away probably Dugs love life and his attachment to spring.
I loved the setting of Iron age Britain and the way Angus Watson managed to combine real history with fantasy fiction. This gave the story a rich and believable feel. Can't wait for the next book.
I found it difficult after listening to the first two Raven's Shadow books to find something that held my attention. I am please to say this certainly did. The story moves along at a good pace, interesting character and some dark humor make this a must read if your looking for something to fill the space between Anthony Ryans next book....
"caught me up, could not stop listening until end"
yes, very gripping
not so much another book as another author/ books, it has the feel and style of D Gemmell... but stands out on its own, very good
all the book
I enjoyed it all
"historical fiction meets gritty fantasy"
Really enjoyed it, kept me gripped from start to finish. Interestingly combines the historical fact with the beliefs of the time, resulting in an Abercrombie style gritty fantastical darkness.
This story is quite captivating couldn't wait for the next chapter it's a bit gorey in places but we'll written so doesn't dwel on it. I love the reader he has the perfect accent for the plot I could listen to him all day. Well worth the long dog walks!!
"a good yarn"
Sean Barrett is without doubt a fabulous narrator so I feel most books he reads will usually be enjoyable. The story is good and I will definitely get part two when it is out. Dug is a fine character and there is an equally good supporting cast of characters. it's a typical road movie of revenge and mishap that chugs along at a comfortable pace. The historical notes have been kept in at the end which is helpful for me as like that sort of thing--if you tend to enjoy Bernard Cornwells Saxon or Arthur books, or a bit of Game of Thrones fantasy and are looking for a new tale, I reckon you will like this too-if you don't just send it back
"Age of Iron...Steel Yourself!"
An action packed, well written fictional glimpse (includes a few oo, er moments) into a bygone age with colourful characters brought to life by the exceptional narration skills of Mr Sean Barrett. So glad this is a trilogy...can't wait to read more! Cleaning the house has never been more fun...thanks Audible. :)
Surprisingly a good read / listen , normally I go for Roman fiction so it was good to hear a story about Britain before the Roman invasion , now waiting for the rest of the series
"Wasn't expecting too much, but"
This was a really good production and story.
Some great characters in a interesting storyline.
Bring on the next two
"Good book, excellent narrator"
worth listening to
The character Dug is very likeable
Good characterisation and clear diction made it a please to listen to
"A ripping yarn!"
Dug is instantly likeable - an interesting insight into a period that not alot is known about. Lowa and, especially Spring are fascinating characters. A great story, brilliantly narrated. Now anxious to listen to the second in the trilogy. I highly recommend this audiobooks.
