There'd been a Rivers at the helm of Argyle Community Hospital for six generations, and Harper Rivers was set to take her father's place whenever he decided to hang up his shingle. Unfortunately, the board of directors had other ideas - they accepted a buyout offer from a health-care conglomerate with plans to close the hospital's doors to the community that depended on it. And Presley Worth, a high-powered corporate financier, came to town to oversee the closure. Funny thing was, no one asked Harper, and she had no intention of following anyone's orders but her own - no matter how beautiful, smart, or commanding the new boss might be.

"One Of Her Best"
There are only small variables in Radclyffe's books, however in those small differences is what separates the good from the not so good. Harper Rivers has followed the family tradition and is the heir apparent to her father as the hospital director. However as is now the case of many communities the the hospital is sold to a conglomerate. This brings Presley Worth into Harper's life and thus begins their love story. Harper and Presley, (damn doesn't Radclyffe come up with the wildest, most unusual androgynous names,) begin the dance that every romance novel, gay or straight goes through to lead a couple to true love in the end. Presley begins the story as a hard edged business woman, without any regard for what will happen to the community when the changes the conglomerate will bring, go through. Then as we all knew it would her relationship with Harper and the community begins to change her into a softer, more caring and lovable person. Almost as big a part of the novel as Harper and Presley is Harper's younger sister Flan, a surgeon and a player who is my far the best character in the book. Flan brings an edge to this story that the writers in this genre rarely give their main characters. A confrontation between the two sisters late in the novel brings about a scene both surprising and titillating.
As a connoisseur of romance novels I know it takes a good writer to create characters the reader/listener cares about enough to take the same old formula and make it work; in this particular work she does.
"i love it"
The kissing scene was hot. the narrator did this book justice . loved it to the end.
"One of my favorite Radclyffe books"
Well narrated. The story and characters are likeable and the tension enjoyable. Not as much build up as other Radclyffe novels and the characters aren't very complicated but I really enjoyed the story. It has a warm, loving feel.
"Lack of Diversity`"
In rating books etc., I operate on the basis of what I call the believability index. Particular when it comes to works that are formulaic and thus are necessarily "fantastical": pulp sci-fi, romance, erotic novels and anything having anything to do with vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters or aliens.
I long ago let go of things like alpha male protagonists, billionaires and ripped Doms as well as their opposite numbers in the cast. These two stories - the second being "Prescription for Love" however are trashing my believability alarms.
Consider: in this story we have
CEO - lesbian
CEO's PA - Lesbian
Chief of Medicine - Lesbian
Chief of Surgery - Lesbian
OR PA - Lesbian
ER Chief - Lesbian
Hetero Younger Sister's good friend - transgender
Several members of the nursing staff - Lesbian or Bi
It's a good thing these women are dating each other because they would normally comprise the entire lesbian population in a small town in the Adirondacks.
But I guess I am being picky. This story line is sweet, the characters fun and we always get our happy ending (if this last is a spoiler for you then this has to be your first book in the genre. My apologies.) A nice read for a good day with a book (well book-on-tape). It got me through hours of mundane chores.
Another book by Radclyffe. Enjoyable and fun. Excellent narrative and easy to listen to. Wonderful.
"My favorite Radclyffe so far"
Yes! The story and the performance were really great and easy to listen too.
I really liked the storyline and how the character dealt with it.
Wow. very good
The whole Rivers family
"good narration "
I liked this story and the narration was nicely done to only make the story better.
Eva Kaminsky is by far the best narrator I have had the pleasure of listening to.
Great story! I would listen to it again and recommend it to others!! Definitely worth the listen!
I'm a big fan of Radclyffe's medical romance books, I realize that most of her books follow the same general format. This was one of my favorites since it addressed the issue of rural health care. The narrator was wonderful and the characters are unique.
"overall a good read, and a great setting"
Really I would rate it 3.8/5, but give it four stars. I am comparing with other Radclyffe work. I am hopeful this marks the start of a new series for Radclyffe, since the location and setting is very well written and I am sure close to the author's heart. I especially like additions such as the Rooster, Tree house, and porch settings / back in time innocence. The characters came across well and were believable. The narrator was good, and created the characters and voices well. It was nice to have the story with less erotica, more other content. However I felt that it could of been longer, since alot of effort was put into creating the environment and backdrop for the romance, but the character relationship and conflicts seemed less then I would have expected. It would have been possible to add a couple of crisis events to have protagonist more challenged with her decision and discovery of love.
So, overall a good read, and a great setting, and why I hope it marks the start of a series, so I can hear and read more about the characters and countryside of Argyle. Perhaps it can be as dangerous as Ptown.
loved it... ran for an extra 6 miles because didnt want it to end... love the depth of character.
