Cherez neskol'ko mesyacev posle poezdki po Kavkazu, v noyabre 1888 goda Cekhov pisal A. S. Suvorinu: "Ah, kakoj ya nachal rasskaz! Pishu na temu o lyubvi. Formu izbral fel'etonno-belletristicheskuyu. Poryadochnyj chelovek uvez ot poryadochnogo cheloveka zhenu i pishet ob ehtom svoe mnenie; zhivet s nej - mnenie; raskhoditsya - opyat' mnenie. Mel'kom govoryu o teatre, o predrassudochnosti "neskhodstva ubezhdenij", o Voenno-Gruzinskoj doroge, o semejnoj zhizni, o nesposobnosti sovremennogo intelligenta k ehtoj zhizni, o Pechorine, ob Onegine, o Kazbeke".
