Omar Khajjam (um 1048 1123) war ein persischer Forscher, der die griechische Wissenschaft nach einer profunden Ausbildung in Mathematik, Physik und Astronomie weiterentwickelte. In einem Werk über Algebra gelangte Omar zu Ergebnissen, die die Wissenschaft des Abendlandeserst im 16. Jahrhundert erreichte. Aber auch die Beschäftigung mit der Dichtkunst gehörte im Orient zu einer höheren Bildung. Seinen eigentlichen Ruhm erlangte Omar als Verfasser der RUBAIJAT, einer Sammlung von Sinnsprüchen. Das Rubai (Mehrzahl Rubaijat) besteht nur aus vier Zeilen - dessen Charakteristikum das Reimspiel ist: Die erste, zweite und vierte Zeile enden im selben Reimklang, während die dritte reimlos bleibt. Diese RUBAIJAT besitzen eine eigentümliche Schönheit, eine ansprechende und vollendete Form von Poesie. Mit Ironie und Skepsis, aber auch mit gelassener und heiterer Melancholie werden Themen wie Tod, Liebe und Vergänglichkeit behandelt.
