Der Begründer der rationalistischen Richtung der neueren Philosophie ist René Descartes. Seine erkenntnistheoretischen Erwägungen (cogito, ergo sum) führen zu geistiger Selbstständigkeit. Baruch de Spinoza war ebenfalls Rationalist. Die Mathematik mit ihrem deduktiven Verfahren gilt ihm wie schon Descartes, als das Ideal menschlicher Wissenschaft. So hat auch er in seinem Hauptwerk die "geometrische Methode" angewandt: d.h. er beginnt mit Definitionen und Axiomen und baut darauf Lehrsätze mit ihren Beweisen.
Anschaulich und nachvollziehbar vermittelt August Messer in seiner Reihe "Geschichte der Philosophie" die Gedanken der beiden Philosophen, die den Beginn der Philosophie der Neuzeit markieren.
