Der nicht mehr junge Schriftsteller Gustav Aschenbach entdeckt am Lido des schwülwarmen Venedig die Gestalt des apollinisch schönen Knaben Tadzio und strebt in seinen Gedanken zu ihm, steigert sich in eine unerfüllbare Liebe und verspielt damit, nach einem Wort von Heinrich Mann, "was ihm das wünschenswerteste schien". Die Faszination, die von dem Knaben ausgeht, lässt Aschenbach seine Umgebung, sein bisheriges Leben vergessen, und er erkennt die herannahende Gefahr nicht - oder will sie nicht erkennen.

Zum Autor

Thomas Mann, 6.6.1875 - 12.8.1955, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Erzählern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit ihm erreichte der moderne deutsche Roman den Anschluss an die Weltliteratur. Manns umfangreiches und vielschichtiges Werk hat eine weltweit kaum zu übertreffende Resonanz gefunden. Schon mit seinem ersten großen Roman, Buddenbrooks, wurde er bekannt und erhielt dafür 1929 den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Nach seinem Exil in den USA kehrte Mann 1952 nach Europa zurück und verstarb 1955 in Zürich.
