"Den store Bastian" er tegnet og skrevet af den tyske børnelæge Heinrich Hoffman, der i 1844 skulle bruge en børnebog som julegave til sin treårige søn Carl. Hoffmann kunne imidlertid ikke finde nogen, der passede ham, og han købte derfor et stilehæfte og tegnede og digtede selv den børnebog, der skulle blive en af verdens mest kendte. Den forelå i boghandelen i julen 1845, og allerede i 1847 udkom en dansk oversættelse. Selvom bogen har langt over 150 år på bagen, er historien om den store Bastian stadig fyldt med en frydefuld gru og gysen, der kan henrykke både store og små.
