Die ursprüngliche Provinz Germanien, die das Land vom Rhein bis zur Elbe umfasste, hat nur zwanzig Jahre vom ersten Feldzug der Drusus, 742 d. St. = 12 v. Chr., bis zur Varusschlacht und dem Falle Alisos 762 d. St. = 9 n. Chr. bestanden.
Theodor Mommsen erhielt als erster Deutscher 1902 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
