Um Weihnachten 1996 ertranken fast 300 Flüchtlinge vor der Südküste Siziliens. Wochen später fanden Fischer Leichenteile in ihren Netzen. Als die Küstenwache nichts unternahm, warfen die Fischer die Körper zurück ins Meer. Sechs Jahre lang behielt das Dorf den Vorfall für sich, der untergegangene Kutter wurde offiziell zum "Geisterschiff" erklärt, bis eine italienische Tageszeitung mit Unterwasserbildern den Beweis von der Existenz des Schiffes erbrachte. Prominente wie Romano Prodi und Dario Fo schickten Petitionen an die italienische Regierung und forderten die Bergung des Schiffes. Aber da es knapp außerhalb der italienischen Hoheitsgewässer gesunken war, sah man keine Verpflichtung, sondern eine rein humanitäre Angelegenheit. Bis auf den heutigen Tag ist nichts geschehen.
