When Charlotte Sawyer is unable to contact her step-sister, Jocelyn, to tell her that one her closest friends was found dead, she discovers that Jocelyn has vanished.
Beautiful, brilliant - and reckless - Jocelyn has gone off the grid before, but never like this. In a desperate effort to find her, Charlotte joins forces with Max Cutler, a struggling PI who recently moved to Seattle after his previous career as a criminal profiler went down in flames - literally. Burned out, divorced and almost broke, Max needs the job.
After surviving a near-fatal attack, Charlotte and Max turn to Jocelyn's closest friends, women in a Seattle-based online investment club, for answers. But what they find is chilling. When her uneasy alliance with Max turns into a full-blown affair, Charlotte has no choice but to trust him with her life. For the shadows of Jocelyn's past are threatening to consume her - and anyone else who gets in their way.

"Hope there is more in this lIne!"
I read the story once and felt like there were a lot of details I didn't weave into the plot at the time. Maybe it was me and distractions in my life.
About a week later I was stuck waiting for someone and decided to go back through the beginning of the story.
I was surprised when got totally sucked into these people, their passions and fears and secrets! Definitely a 5 when I can enjoy a book this much on a 2nd run through.
I enjoy most Jayne Krentz' books in all her timeframes. This left me wanting more. NOW! Please. It is going to be hard waiting.
"Another fantastic story"
The characters come to life off the pages of the story. With a mystery and romance thrown in to boot. The plot has twists and turns, keeping the reader unable to put the book down, until the final pages. Great characters and plot. Fell in love with the characters and of course the romantic suspense. Can't wait to see if there is a sequel???
"loved it especially the end great story narrator"
loved it especially the end! narrator is great story has something for everyone love this author
"Krentz usual excellence!!"
Interesting characters with snappy, fun dialogue in a soul searching, relevant adventure that touches your heart, portrays resilience, loving friendship and valuing life. Thank you Jayne!!!
I had never heard of this author but thought I would give it a try.. very glad I did!! Kept my attention throughout entire book! Hope there is a sequel to Max's quest to find the man he has been searching for since he was a child !
"For a B&B borrowed read"
This came close to a two but picked up after the half way point. This would be perfect for a book you pick up while on winter break at a B&B in the mountains.
"Another great one from JAK!"
I loved this book. The thread of family runs deep in this story, along with mystery and romance!! I highly recommend this book.
"Love the story Hated the reader"
As usual great Jayne Ann Krantz story. But this reader has such a flat way of reading it takes away from the enjoyment of the story.
I always like JAKrentz characters . There is always fun with the drama and even when the mystery is predictable there is always good twists.
Please stop her from reading one of my favorite authors.
Lots of twists. Strong female characters. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the author's constant use of the characters' first and last names throughout 70 plus chapters.
"A little disappointed ."
I felt that the story had lots of blank spots. What was in the box they searched for for so long.? The reader was not right for the Charlotte character, I had just read a great Jayne Anne Krentz novel and
The idea for the story seemed interesting and it had the potential to be, but every single emotion, thought or action of both the heroine and hero is described in agonisingly long drawn out detail, and to make matters worse repeats itself over and over and over again. I started skipping through sections the story and every time I started again there she was she describing a thought or feeling. Turned out it was a (predictable) romance story and not even a good one at that.
"Jayne Ann Krentz is back on form"
Well, I can answer this question easily as I have already listened to it twice and I am currently reading the book.
I can't say without spoiling the ending - sorry.
I found Amanda Leigh Cobb's voice very pleasant to listen to, she managed to differentiate between all the various characters so you always knew who was talking. It compares very favourably to her other performances.
Yes absolutely, unfortunately one has to sleep sometime.
I am a fan of Jayne Ann Krentz, having read nearly all her novels over the course of many years. She is well and truly back on form, some of her recent novels (while still good reads and ten times better then some other authors who could do with the services of a decent editor) have not been up to her normal standard. Interesting characters, great story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very end. Excellent.
