Publisher's Summary

Mrs Laetitia Rodd is the impoverished widow of an Archdeacon: she is also a private detective of the utmost discretion. In winter 1850, she is asked by Sir James Calderstone to investigate the background of an 'unsuitable' woman his son intends to marry. In the guise of governess, she travels to the family seat, Wishtide, where she discovers that the Calderstones have more to hide than most. As their secrets unfold, the case takes an unpleasant turn when a man is found dead outside a tavern. Mrs Rodd’s keen eyes and astute wits are taxed as never before in her search for the truth.

    "Thoroughly entertaining"

A hugely enjoyable High Victorian detective and legal drama with a difference. Romps through the countryside and city taking in the seedy underbelly and high society. I didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did, but now I am desperate for more of Mrs Rodd adventures! This was my first experience of a Kate Saunders novel and I was not disappointed.

This was also the first book I've heard narrated by Charlotte Strevens, and I thought she was brilliant. Instantly recognisable characters (obviously once you 'meet' them in the tale) and beautifully paced.

    "Absolutely Delightful"

Laetitia Rodd is an absolutely splendid heroine and this really is one of my favourite listens of all time. Mrs Rodd may be a genteel lady fallen on somewhat hard times but she is no stereotype and this book is well written and beautifully read. Her brother and housekeeper are also deftly written characters and the plot itself is a good one. I do hope that we see more of Mrs Rodd soon.

    "The Secrets of Wishhide"

This was a really relaxing and enjoyable murder mystery story based in 1850s if I'd known this I wouldn't have purchased it but I'm so glad I did

"Not So Many Secrets At Wishtide (but still good)"
Would you try another book written by Kate Saunders or narrated by Charlotte Strevens?

Karen Saunders book has a strong central character and she drew me into the time in history she writes about, which I liked. While there are many secrets uncovered, I found the main ones fairly unsurprising - perhaps I've ploughed through too many historical mysteries. Although it was a little obvious to me who did it I still enjoyed the twists and turns on the journey our sleuth went on to find the evidence that will free the innocent and entrap the guilty. I like the fact we got to know the victims a little, which can pull us into caring more about the outcome. Worth the listening time.

Charlotte Strevens narrates with a clear, expressive voice but I found a couple characters hard to tell apart by the voice given to them. To be fair there were a number of characters and this would have been a challenge. I'd listen to her again.

    "An easy listen"

Easy to listen to while doing something else. The narrator did a good job of sounding like 'an archdeacon's lady'. I found the story improbable with too many similarities in the storylines of women who love too blindly and men who don't deserve it. However, if there's another Laetitia Rodd mystery I'll enjoy listening to it.

    "No secrets, obvious plot"
Would you try another book written by Kate Saunders or narrated by Charlotte Strevens?

Well written but formulaic. This is the first in a series of six, according to Amazon, and the characters are all there but there just isnt any plot. Take out the two murders and make it a Victorian romance!

Has The Secrets of Wishtide put you off other books in this genre?

    No

What about Charlotte Strevens’s performance did you like?

Narrator is splendid, her male voices are gruff and she nails the different voices of the many female characters in this book, so I was never confused about who was speaking

If this book were a film would you go see it?

    No
