Publisher's Summary

Ravaged by time and abandoned by the people who once flocked there in search of golden nuggets, Ragged-Ass Gulch is a ghost town. What’s left is a small, proud, and close pack of people who aren’t looking for change. But change seems to be afoot as several mysterious fires plague the town. That’s where the Nameless Detective comes in...

    "Character study"

Story reads like a writing assignment. I would give it a C. Tries to be a character study but lacks the character development and too contrived and predictable to be entertaining. Guessed the "plot twist" way before the end. Sorry--read like something I might write.

    "Good Listening"

Unlike many of the other reviewers I found this a light entertaining story. It helped pass away the hours I spent on the highway listening to it pleasantly. Perhaps it is the fact that it was free but I would recommend this for easy listening, non-demanding, entertainment and well worth twice what I paid for it. Thanks Audible. More free stories like this would be appreciated.

    "Cant beat free..."

This was a nice light listening without consequences. Nothing to write home about on the plotline, narrator, or entertaining front but the price was right! Keep it coming audible!!

    "Uninspired"

It was a very easy listen, with little to no plot-twists. The story is light in terms of content, which is great if you don't want anything meaty, fleshed-out, or very intriguing (e.g. if you're a student doing homework while listening, and don't want to be too distracted). Objectively, it is not painfully poor; it's just not inspired or anything out of the ordinary. "The Ghosts of Ragged-ass Gulch" is not by any means a memorable piece, so the price-tag of "free" is fitting.

    "Know it was free, but......"

Bad accents, marginal reading, weak story. Sorry to be so negative, might work as a kids story.

"First Audible selection that I had to turn off"

This is a painful listen - no wonder it was free. The narration was so stilted, it was like listening to a third grader read. I would rather have listened to the story as text-to-speech; it would have been smoother. I can't even comment on the writing, because the reading was so bad.

"glad it was free, want my 90 minutes back"

This read like a Hardy Boys story. I kept expecting some plot twist to save it, but none ever came. The girl showed some promise in the beginning as a wildcard, like maybe she would show up her husband in his own line of work, but no such luck. She ended up being only marginally helpful. Everything was completely predictable. The detective's reasoning was nothing special, and every other character behaved exactly as you'd expect from the first impression.

    "Script 101"

A standard in story line. No imagination. No new information in this rewrite of an old script that's been done so many times before on every TV show since the 50s.

    "The title held such promise."

But only delivered a recording that was painfully narrated with insulting vocal portrayals of female characters and poorly drawn regional accents. What could make this recording worse? How about a cliche-ridden stereotype-driven plot. Even for free, this recording cost too much.

    "Don't waste your time"

Wow - this was once of the worst books I have read or listened to in a long time. The writing is poor to mediocre (at best). The author substitutes real thought for cliche, and over-used descriptors for inventive and fresh images. There is no plot twist; you can tell "who-dunnit" from the beginning. Even the evil corporation is never so bad that you sympathize with the characters. Awful and a waste of time.
