Publisher's Summary

With deceptive economy in these nine short stories, Ruth Rendell indicates hidden depths in ordinary events and creates a sense of profound unease. Ruth and Penelope at their besy

This is an outstanding audible book both for the brilliance of the Ruth Rendell’s stories and the matching quality of Penelope Keith’s narration.

Classic Rendell in little bits

Wonderfully engaging short stories. I'm not sure about the reviews that describe her characters as 'dark' and 'unpleasant' as if that's a bad thing. That underbelly of human existence is Rendell's trademark and she does it so well.
Lovely to see a little Wexford in there. And Keith's narration was exemplary. I only know her from her 'posh' tv characters and was very pleasantly surprised to see that she has brilliant repertoire of some pretty diverse characters.
Very enjoyable, and on the free list!

OK but just weird, obscure and underdone

Penelope Keith was delightful as the many voices of the characters, unfortunately this compilation was not RR's best example of her work.

I don't mind that sometimes the reader/listener has to work out what happened, but on more than one occassion I jthought the author had run out of time, and/or ideas, and/or patience and just decided to work on another project... so the reader/listener is just left scratching their head.
