Publisher's Summary

Big secrets run deep. Former FBI agent Jack McBride took the job as chief of police for Stillwater, Texas, to start a new life with his teenage son, Ethan, away from the suspicions that surrounded his wife's disappearance a year earlier. With a low crime rate and a five-man police force, he expected it to be a nice, easy gig; hot checks, traffic violations, some drugs, occasional domestic disturbances, and petty theft. Instead, within a week he is investigating a staged murder-suicide, uncovering a decades' old skeleton buried in the woods, and managing the first crime wave in 30 years. For help navigating his unfamiliar, small-town surroundings, Jack turns to Ellie Martin, one of the most respected women in town - her scandal-filled past notwithstanding.

Despite Jack's murky marriage status and the disapproval of Ethan and the town, they are immediately drawn to each other. As Jack and Ellie struggle with their budding relationship, they unearth shattering secrets long buried and discover the two cases Jack is working, though 50 years apart, share a surprising connection that will rattle the town to its core.

Good until the terrible ending.

Good story and characters, OK mystery. I can't abide by leaving major issues and questions unresolved or lazily-constructed answers to some of the mysteries. The author invested so much in creating room for a sequel that they didn't tie up loose ends of this story and left a heap of things unresolved and unsatisfied. So disappointed. Felt like a cheap attempt at a series cash grab.

What the …?

What’s with the crappy ending!? The story itself is good, but the ending seems like the writer was on some kind of deadline to finish up!

So much promise

Really enjoyed this book until 3/4 in when it seemed to lose its thread and then the ending. Deary me. I actually yelled out, 'What? Is that it?' So much promise. So many opportunities for twists and an ending that would excite the reader but sadly it just fizzled out.

Good yarn but cut short

I really enjoyed this - so much detail in the beginning - and middle - though the ending just came all to abruptly. It’s is if the author got bored (shouldn’t have - there was heaps more to go into) I suppose they want to keep the story going for the next book … which I will listen to - but a tad disappointing in the quick wrap up

when you realise it’s an underwhelming story but persist anyway

wish I hadn’t. Not great, old fashioned small town love story the murder mystery is the side story.

Writer lost the plot

Really think the writer couldn’t make up her mind to write a murder mystery or a sexy love story so tried to cram in both. Would get mildly interesting then would veer off to something else then decided the story had to end so it did. Pretty much rubbish.

Umm... not great

Can see why this book is a freebie. Pretty dull. I didn't really take to the main characters, unrealistic relationship, uneventful storyline and the narrator was wrong for this book in my opinion. Bit cringe-worthy to be honest.

More cheesy romance than crime story

The story could have been ok but love side story in it was so gag worthy I had to fast forward most of those parts as they were so cheesy it made me cringe. I felt like I was listening to a cheap romance novel instead of a crime story.
