    "Wow, just wow!"

Holy Moly was this ever a good book! I mean WOW!!! This is a horror / adventure / suspense / mystery / edge of your seat thrill ride and more. It's like survivor meets the hunger games. It was such a good read, I stayed up way to late just so I could finish it. This book had me on the edge of my seat. Every time I thought the story was coming to an end, something else would happen! It has so many twists and turns in it and some of the characters are really twisted too. If you like Steven King books, you will love this book too!

Someone had an idea to make a new reality show on a deserted island and it would only last 2 weeks. The contestants were wined and dined on a huge yacht (that turned out to be rented) and promised the winner of the event would get 5 million dollars tax free. Naturally the contestants all jumped on the idea and signed up. Little did they know that all contestants were chosen for a reason and that reason would be discovered down the road.

As the days go by contestants start to disappear and / or die. Everyone is suspicious about everyone else and no one trusts any one! The entire island has cameras every where. Then a few days in, the contestants are told that this is going to be an internet and pay per view betting sensation. People are actually betting on each contestant and what they think the contestants next moves will be. The contestants also learn they have several things in common with one of them being they are are a survivor of something in their past.

This book was just incredible! The author, Paul Draker totally blew my mind with this story. So well written and the imagination it took to come up with all the details. The narrator, Teri Schnaubelt is one of my favorite narrators and always entertaining with all her voices and accents! This book itself, is a fantastic bargain at 725 pages in book format or 23 hours in audio... what a deal!

    "AREALLY GOOD LISTEN!"

Some sections of the book were pretty unrealistic. It is a a work of fiction after all. I couldn't stop listening. You can't ask for a better recommendation. The narration was excellent.

    "Exciting plot and great characters."
What did you love best about New Year Island?

The story kept going and didn't just abruptly end without wrapping up the story line.

What was one of the most memorable moments of New Year Island?

    Constant plot twists.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, although I rationed it out over the painting job I was completing.

    "Narrator was very good..."

And the beginning chapter drew me in. After that, it just didn't work for me. Wishy-washy, unlikeable characters, implausible plot, and too many words. I love a long book that I can get lost in and really tried to plug along, but this one just didn't interest me. Maybe I'm too old - I don't like 99% of the reality shows out there - and younger readers may love it. All that said, the writing itself was good, and the narrator did a great job.

"A well-performed WhoDunnit with a bit of gore"
Would you consider the audio edition of New Year Island to be better than the print version?

I have not (and may not) read a print book of this size. I enjoyed the audio version, however.

What was one of the most memorable moments of New Year Island?

Some of the descriptions of characters, particular toward the end, were quite graphic. I do not want to give away the conclusion, but some of the images in my head toward the end as a threat was described were actually somewhat disturbing to picture.

What does Teri Schnaubelt bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought her voice work was excellent. It was quite easy to differentiate the characters and really detect the emotions flowing through each as a result. The rest of the narration was also good -- She injected quite a bit of personality that added to the "whodunnit" mystique.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    It's Survivor with a twist - AND it's personal.

    Any additional comments?

I knocked one star off from the story because, by the end, I was literally begging for an epilogue. There isn't much closure once the threat is resolved as to how those who remained carried on with their lives, told their stories to others, experienced the aftermath, etc. I also knocked off one star because the author repeated a lot of emotional turmoil going through the character's heads several times. A few I would understand, but I felt it eventually became overly repetitive at times. There were also a couple of unresolved threads I would have liked more explanation on.

None of these make me regret using my credit on this, however. Highly recommended.

"Overall, a pretty good story well narrated..."

Very easy to listen to. I was able to spend about three days marathon listening to the book and didn't find myself daydreaming like I sometimes do with long and tedious titles. With this being said, there were plenty of times that I found myself getting annoyed by the monotony of the characters repeatedly getting drawn into arguments and allowing themselves to be so easily drawn away from the fact that they were all stuck on the island and at the mercy of whoever concocted the insidious plot. I couldn't help but think that if I were in those shoes, I wouldn't have wasted so much time bickering over petty nuances and separating myself from those stuck on the island with me, but would have instead been looking to bring the group closer together. Really, my only other significant complaint is that I think it took the group too long to figure out that something fishy was going on (no pun intended). But overall, I found the story to be pretty entertaining and would recommend it to others. A credit well spent!!

    Story
"Possibly the worst audiobook I've ever bought..."

Where to start, annoying implausible characters with their utterly average "extraordinary" back stories? (she's a survivor because she once broke her thumb - "totz omg!" as I believe the youth say today) Or the plot holes and continuity errors? Or the annoying, implausible characters?

I know, I'll start with the eyes. And the bluffs. Dear god, before this book I suspect I'd heard the word "bluffs" about 5 times in my life. I'm pretty sure I'm currently running at a couple of dozen times per chapter. Per character. Of which there are about 13.

To get an accurate idea of the content please use the following basic paragraph planner:

(Character A) stands (geographic reference ie; above the, below the, next to the, in the shadow of the) bluffs, their (inset adjective and colour ie tungsten grey) eyes (insert authorial verb ie flashing, glowering, sparking) at (insert character B) as they stand (insert geographic reference) the bluffs with their (insert adjective and colour) eyes (insert verb and direction ie "cast downwards". Character A, who has no prior knowledge of character B will then voice why this hitherto stranger has (angered, disappointed, betrayed etc) them despite the fact they owe each other nothing.

    For example:

"Camilla stood on the edge of the bluffs, her emerald eyes flashing in anger as she stared at JT who stood in the shadow of the bluffs gazing towards the horizon visible above with his languid caramel eyes. Camilla was furious that JT, who she had met 30 seconds earlier whilst walking along the bluffs, hadn't realised the depth of the trauma she had been caused after receiving a parking ticket 9 years earlier."

    Repeat
    Repeat
    Repeat
    And so on

It's a book so terribly written it drives me to incoherence, the basic plot of a Survivor snuff series being interesting enough to keep you sucked in but everything else conspiring to make you launch the cd out of the window.

On the plus side the narrator does a great job!

Great characters, interesting backdrop and a mystery you think you've solved early on, but you're not even close. I really enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery or is interested in human behaviour.

"Good premise but got a little lost along the way"

Wasn't sure what to expect when I got this book, the idea seemed interesting and thought it could be pretty good. Things started off pretty well and was doing a great job of building the characters, but then things started to go a little of course, some characters just became more and more annoying and unbelievable, the stories conclusion and the final reveal was a bit of a letdown to me. Made it through it all but not very memorable and not sure if I would go for any Paul Draker stuff again. Teri Schnaubelt did do a great job at the narration however.
