A freak accident in rural Wyoming leads the sheriff's department to arrest a man for a possible double homicide, but further investigations suggest a much more horrifying discovery - a serial killer who has been kidnapping, torturing, and mutilating victims all over the United States for at least 25 years. The suspect claims he is a pawn in a huge labyrinth of lies and deception - can he be believed?
The case is immediately handed over to the FBI, but this time they're forced to ask for outside help. Ex-criminal behavior psychologist and lead detective with the Ultra Violent Crime Unit of the LAPD Robert Hunter is asked to run a series of interviews with the apprehended man. These interviews begin to reveal terrifying secrets that no one could've foreseen, including the real identity of a killer so elusive that no one, not even the FBI, had any idea he existed...until now.

"Silence of the Lambs meets a textbook"
If there was less time spent listening to endless drivel from the "bad guy".
The Burning Room by Michael Connelly
Robert Hunter I suppose as he was the main character
Lucien..... which would make it just a criminal profiling textbook I believe
Disappointing read. The rest of the Robert Hunter books are fast paced and exciting with twists and turns. This was just long passages by the Hannibal Lechter type character about how he beat the criminal profiling textbooks... with just way too much time spent reading out bitter diatribes. I fell asleep more listening to this book than any other. Disappointing from start to finish.
"This is a you won't believe there's more story"
Fantastically but hideously violent but it is cliff-hanger after cliff-hanger. Sometimes adding a shock on a shock. Great story and would read more but it pushes credibility beyond the point of mad.
BUT for all I can criticise it, it is a well crafted story well written and Chris is clearly a craftsman
"A cleaver thriller"
This is a well written thriller which gripped right from the start and didn't let go. Without giving anything away it's a battle of will and wits of two old friends. Each on different sides of the law. Well worth a listen, it's no ordinary serial killer thriller.
Probably the best thriller I have ever read. brilliant book. highly recommend it if you like a good psychological page turner.
"One sick dude"
Not read the print.
The realisation who the killer was
Hard to say there were a few
Cc books are always packed with suspense
Some people say cc's shocks just for the sake of it. Yes he is more graphical with his torture and gore than the standard thriller novelist but in my opinion that is what makes him so good! The only reason I've marked him down slightly was because I was a little disappointed with the end, thought I was a bit rushed and convenient
I have read all Chris charters books and this was the first audiobook I have listened to, great story and storytelling I'll have to go and buy all the Chris Carter audiobooks now thanks again for a great listen
It promised to be a good listen at the start but was predictable half way through. The narrator did a brilliant job though.
I got this audio book from a recommendation on the web site having never read any of Chris Carter's books before. I did enjoy it although it was very graphic and gut churning at times. Well written and extremely well performed by the reader. I'll be checking out more of the authors works.
"Couldn't finish it"
I read and listen to a lot of crime novels and I don't think I'm particularly squeamish but this one was just too much for me. Got just over half way through and when I was listening to a very gruesome scene, I realised that I didn't want to go on. I'm going to return it.
Have read all Chris Carter books some time ago, and now listening! 'An Evil Mind' is a dark and terrifying psychological thriller that grips from beginning to end. I recommend reading the series in order, and getting to know the main character, Detective Robert Hunter. Being familiar with the character just adds another dimension, gives more depth to the character, and makes 'An Evil Mind' even more absorbing. You should definitely read or listen to Chris Carter's books. A brilliant author. You will not be disappointed!
