Publisher's Summary

The hit Commune Series is back with book five! Rejoin some of your old favorites and plenty of unforgettable new ones on another deadly romp through post-apocalyptic America.

Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washington D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver.

Bug, a natural, charismatic leader, refuses to leave anyone behind while the other, Books, is a pragmatic social outsider who wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive.

But DC isn't exactly the safehaven they hoped for, having been divided into three major factions: the Mall—which is controlled by a man named Knox and his lieutenants—Columbia Heights to the north, and Anacostia to the south.

On arrival, Books immediately recognizes that the people of the Mall are in a wartime posture. Uncomfortable with the idea of being pulled into someone else's war, he advises that the entire company should depart. Bug, upon realizing that the Mall is wonderfully organized with hydro-electric power, security, and a functioning hospital, refuses that advice, stating that it is more than fair that they should help their new benefactors defend their adopted territory.

Can their bond endure their conflicting points of view or will they be drawn against each other, and into a war that will consume everyone...leaving DC in Ashes?

An awesome next step in the series

Two of my favourite authors coming together to write in one of my favourite series of novels. I've just finished it and its time for a re-listen already.
A very compelling story.

Wow!

That was awesome, love the new characters. Joshua is so good at creating the back story that allows his characters to just pop out of the page.

RC Bray was perfect as usual.

Commune +

I can see why people thought this would be a continuation story. Should change the title to Commune: xxxx. That said, the characters were interesting, had some depth and the writing was pretty good. Thought some elements could have been fleshed out more. Fairly good read.

Spin-off Story

This was certainly a fantastic addition to the universe that has been created in the commune book series, plenty of action, packed dialogue within the story building on with the series can potentially go with in the future these books.

Dystopian soap opera at its near best

I enjoy both writers and adore R C Bray fantastic performances so this one definitely did what you’d expect if you have heard their other work.
The story and world setting is interesting and there is plenty of action and some lovely prose about people and the environment around them. Made more interesting because of the difficult circumstances people find themselves in.
I’m not sure the story would work in most countries as universal free health care is a thing. So the hoarding of health services as a catalyst for conflict feels more a US thing. Like “Breaking Bad”doesn’t make sense to Brits or Australians.
That said, the characters have more depth then the standard dystopian sci-fi. There presented as flawed but trying to get by which makes the conflict powerful for its hopelessness.
If you don’t mind a “space opera” then this is series of dystopian soap operas is definitely for you albeit probably better then many other drama available in the genre. R C Bray narration can been banked on to lift even the most pedestrian story and he doesn’t disappoint.
