About this listen

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

A wonderful tale of vengence, kept me at the edge of my seat. It was such a joy to listen to, Bill does a great job narrating making each character's voices unique going above and beyond what I would've thought. Wait and hope.

Truely a classic

This particular version is exquisitly narrated by Mssr Homewood and his comfort with the non English words greatly enhances the feeling that you really are reading a tale set on France.

An annual read for me!

Slow to start but nail biting conclusion. Loved the narrative by Bill Homewood, best I've heard so far! His use of different voices made me forget I was listening to one person.

Fantastic

No doubt a few tropes were started in this book. Some areas take a bit long but the journey is satisfying.

A classic tale of revenge

A fascinating glimpse into the past, an incredible performance by the voice actor and an epic, masterfully crafted story.

Epic.

What a joy. This adventure did not feel like 52hours. They could quite easily make an 8 part series and it would be huge.

Brilliant, epic, stupendous

This is a wonderful plot driven narrative. Although the characters are often written within the constructs of Christian duality, and lack contemporary ambiguity, the central revenge plot is very rewarding. You can see the influence this has had on everything from Shawshank Redemption to Taken. The middle is a slog but the set up and payoff are awesome.

This is a monster
