Jessie Else disappeared the summer the Lambs came to Magpie Beach. Not that the two events were connected at all, in reality; only in my own head, in my own world. They marked for me the end of a certain quiet time and the start of a more complicated living.

Story
Ned West dreams of sailing across the river on a boat of his very own. To Ned, a boat means freedom–the fresh open water, squid-rich reefs, fires on private beaches–a far cry from life on Limberlost, the family farm, where his father worries and grieves for Ned's older brothers. They're away fighting in a ruthless and distant war, becoming men on the battlefield, while Ned–too young to enlist–roams the land in search of rabbits to shoot, selling their pelts to fund his secret boat ambitions. But as the seasons pass and Ned grows up, real life gets in the way.

Publisher's Summary
A compelling novel from the bestselling author of Goodwood and Cedar Valley.
On a hot morning in 1991 in the regional town of Clarke, Barney Clarke (no relation) is woken by the unexpected arrival of many policemen: they are going to search his backyard for the body of a missing woman.
Next door, Leonie Wallace and little Joe watch the police cars through their kitchen window. Leonie has been waiting for this day for six years. She is certain that her friend—Ginny Lawson—is buried in that backyard under a slab of suspicious concrete. But the fate of Ginny Lawson is not the only mystery in Clarke. Barney lives alone in a rented house with a ring on his finger, but where is Barney's wife? Leonie lives with four-year-old Joe, but where is Joe's mother?
Clarke is a story of family and violence, of identity and longing, of unlikely connections and the comedy of everyday life. At its centre stands Leonie Wallace, a travel agent who has never travelled, a warm woman full of love and hope and grief, who must steer Joe safely through a very strange time indeed.
'This is a masterful novel...readers who loved Goodwood will find even more to love here.' BOOKS + PUBLISHING
'So much truth, so much aching and pain by humour. What a wonderful book.' LINDY MORRISON

One of my favourite stories this year!
I loved the story and the realness, ordinariness of the characters. Very 80s Australia! It really took me back there. Sarah Blasko's narration was perfect for this story. Would listen again!

Narrator is a treat
Having Sarah Blasko narrate this story was such a bonus. And, with Goodwood, such a great story of small town Australia

Loved it!
Holly Throsby creates characters so relatable to my own experience of life in Australia, that I swear I’ve known these people or interact with them everyday.
I enjoyed Holly’s subtle critique, often through understated and humorous dialogue, of Australian patriarchal social and cultural interactions. Lee and Dorrie, through simple but powerful conversation, unexpectedly express the stuff we’ve come to not say about violence towards women at the hands men. It’s kind of freeing hearing these everyday Australian women say what’s not addressed in our media and discourse. How true the institutionalised and prioritised protection of DV perpetrators has been, which comes to light in the Sargent Marell character.
Loved Sarah’s narration, particularly of her characterisation of Lee Lee and especially the way she interacts with Joe. The love is real, understated and as dependable as time.
Loved this book. It got me out of my warm bed to get my frosty morning walk done and buoyed me when tackling long drives for work.
Thanks Holly. I don’t know how you do it!

Great book that explores the impact of grief
Everyone is caring something they don’t want to face. This story is a great way of capturing the emotionality behind loss, grief and moving on.
Both a crime novel, and a great look at human nature. I really enjoyed this book.

An immersive experience
I really enjoyed this story that substantially differed from your typical murder mystery. It became clear early on that one of the key themes was going to be closure. We all have experienced loss in one way or other so observing the ways different characters all grow on their journey helps to shed new insights.
