Fans of Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books will devour this book - a cracking adventure brimming with magic, intrigue and a treasure trove of characters that the listener can't help but fall for. We find everyone's favourite irascibly insolent djinni serving at the court of King Solomon in 950 BC Jerusalem, where he is causing his customary chaos and must help a girl assassin sent by the Queen of Sheba to steal the all-powerful Ring of Solomon.
The comic relief is perfectly timed, the dialogue sharp and snappy and the fiendishly clever plot perfectly handled with Jonathan's trademark flair and command of language. Thrills, chills and a danger-spiked finale - this is one of the publishing events of the year.

"Hooray - Bartimaeus is back!"
So great to find another Bartimaeus book - the character is just so likeable! This story is set many years before the events of the original trilogy, looking back on some of Bartimaeus's adventures with King Solomon, which he so often referred to in the other books. Very enjoyable. The reading performance is good too, though I listened to this very shortly after the other trilogy (which was read by a different narrator) so I found it a bit difficult to adjust to the new interpretation.
For those of you who have already experienced the intrigue, fast pace and wit that surrounds Bartimaeus - hold onto your hats, he's off again! I listen to "Barti" with my 12 year old son on car journeys and I cannot recommend Jonathan Stroud's work highly enough. He delivers exciting and literate adventures that not only entertain, but provide ample opportunities for discussion about the plot, its setting and characters. We have listened to the trilogy and now Solomon. The humour is wonderful throughout and the narration perfect. Enjoy! - these stories are a rare gem.
"Jeff Rawle even better than Simon Jones"
I greatly enjoyed Simon Jones' reading of Book 1 of the Bartimaeus Trilogy, but I haven't been able to buy the audio version of Book 2 because of purchase restrictions to listeners like myself living outside the UK. So I wasn't sure if The Ring of Solomon would make much sense. In fact, it was brilliant as a stand-alone story and I found Jeff Rawle's characterizations even wittier and more entertaining than those of Simon Jones. Highly recommended.
"A great read and even better listen"
I love the Bartimaeus books. Originally downloaded as suitable listening for the children, my son and I now compete for the first read/listen. Full of wonderful language, adventure, imagination, myth and very funny, I would rate these alongside Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl!
the series is absolute pure gold!! brilliant, witty and engaging! I loved every second of it and wish there were more adventures to read but alas I've read all of them!!!
"Yet another fantastic book"
Yes. Maybe in a couple of years.
Believe it or not The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. Just loved the humour of Bartimaeus.
Very good. I wasn't happy when they changed narrator and wasn't going to get it. so glad I did
Laughing, lots of laughing.
Great listen. I hope they bring out more in this series!
"Great story, read excellently."
I am a big fan of the Bartimaeus series and bought this because a friend still hasn't given my physical copy back. I was worried as Jonathan Stroud's writing is particularly good at developing the story in your imagination.
This didn't last long as the narrator was excellent and hilarious, I didn't even miss the footnotes that I'm a fan of. Like Toy Story there is humour in here for all ages so everyone can read it.
If you have read other Barti then you will like this and if you havent then try it its great. Well narated with a good range of voices although my one negative was that the girls voice wasnt quite how I 'heard her' but it didnt spoil the story. More Bart please.
