Publisher's Summary

"'There will be three tasks, spaced throughout the school year, and they will test the champions in many different ways...their magical prowess - their daring - their powers of deduction - and, of course, their ability to cope with danger.'"

The Triwizard Tournament is to be held at Hogwarts. Only wizards who are over seventeen are allowed to enter - but that doesn't stop Harry dreaming that he will win the competition. Then at Hallowe'en, when the Goblet of Fire makes its selection, Harry is amazed to find his name is one of those that the magical cup picks out. He will face death-defying tasks, dragons and Dark wizards, but with the help of his best friends, Ron and Hermione, he might just make it through - alive!

    "Fantastic"

I have enjoyed every single second of this book. Stephen Fry has done it again. His mastery of voices and accents makes you forget you're listening to the book being read by one man. Amazing talent. Thoroughly enjoyable. Of course he has fantastic material to work with, JK Rowling's writing is clever, witty and pure imagination. Wonderful

Stephan Fry's performance of this book is simply brilliant. I have listened to all the Jim Dale narrated Harry Potter books and now I will have to start from the beginning and listen again. Loved it.

Stephen Fry is amazing once again. My favourite book and story of HP so far! My most memorable moments might spoil it... so I'll leave it at that. I know that they've been out for years but as I am still reading/listening my first time I know there are others and I will tell them now, you will not be disappointed. xx

    "Convincing a sceptic "

Ok i gotta admit, that was pretty damn good. As someone who never really understood the hype of Harry Potter from the movies, I've slowly been reading (well listening, thanks to Stephen Fry) the books due to some not so subtle nudging from my Harry Potter crazed wife. I was not expecting to enjoy it when I began my journey, but after i think half way thru book 3 i was noticing i was listening longer and longer each time. By the time I had started this book i was eager for more quidditch and Harry shenanigans. Although (spoiler alert) i was initially disappointed to find out there would be no quidditch this time around, it didn't seem to matter as the story was so fleshed out it didn't seem to need it. The fact this book was almost double the length of the last (in hrs for audiobooks length anyway) should be testament to this, Rowlings writing style went from strength to strength each book and this book seemed like a culmination of that hard work. As someone who started out as a pretty big sceptic of the whole Potterverse, putting it down to a simple children's series i am happy to say I was quite wrong indeed.

"Things are never going to be the same"

I've always found this my favourite of the Harry Potter books. Some of the later ones are probably more exciting and have a better language, but somehow this one just marks the beginning of something new, something darker. Harry Potter finds himself in this book. He does continue being very insecure, but he is a teenager. He knows who his people are now and that acknowledgement is what makes this book magic for me.

    "Seriously Good Potter!"

This is the book where I think JK Rowling really decided to get a bit more serious. If the previous book had a slightly harder edge this took that further and added more depth and sophistication. While the opening books were genuinely full of child-like joy and adventure this one upped the ante considerably. Of course this one is still full of the by now expected warm humour and interplay between the characters plus the clever placing of traditional fantasy ideas of wizardry into the modern world. This is still about schoolchildren growing up and their relationships with each other and their teachers as well as all the sorcery. The humanity of the books and the way they reflect some of the serious, and also some of the less serious issues within our modern societies remains and is developed still further.

The story does take its time in building to a climactic battle and includes a few quite unexpected twists, not much is quite as it seems at Hogwarts! The tri-wizard cup is a major feature and includes some of the most exciting scenes in the Harry Potter series particularly I thought the second task which takes place under water.

For those who have previously only come to Harry Potter via the films then this audiobook will be a huge treat. The films were excellent but there is so much more to discover in this volume. Notable parts that were missing from the film include the Quidditch World Cup Final match, Hermione’s civil rights campaign and lots of trademark Rowling character interactions which explain them and what they do in much greater depth. They do make the story considerably longer but it never drags as a result! This is of course in part due to the excellence of Mr Fry. I will admit that I can’t help thinking about the deliciously evil Alan Rickman delivering Severus Snape’s sardonic malevolence but in truth Stephen Fry carries the stories as beautifully as I can imagine a single narrator being capable of.

Once again, in summary, a quite delightful use of a credit!

"All wonderful until skipping 10 hours in..."
What made the experience of listening to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Book 4 the most enjoyable?

I love these books and was so excited to see them on Audible, and cannot fault the narration, story at all. My review is to warn people and perhaps audible of the skipping of the track during the first task. Between 10:03:48 for a few minutes. I have deleted and redownloaded but this still occurs. Disappointing and distracting, but at least it is not too long. I am yet to listen if this reoccurs in the rest of the book.

    "Well worth the listen"

Stephen Fry gives an excellent performance of each of the characters as they journey through their 4th adventure.

As with the other books in this series the story differs in places from the movie version but since these are the original version it is clear that this will be the case.

I highly recommend this book to anybody who is either new to Harry's story or are a long standing fan of the Harry Potter story.

This story tells us in more detail how Harry has to overcome a number of obstacles which have been put in front of him including taking part in the latest Tri-wizard cup as the 4th entry. He has to overcome the fact that until he completes the first task, the members of his own house (as well as the other houses) believe that he entered himself somehow. This includes his best friend Ron who does not talk to him (similar to the movie).

The story that contains the rest of the tasks and the aftermath of Cedrick's death is also in more detail which is a nice part of the story.

Harry Potter is a great and entertaining series of books which can be enjoyed at any age.

Having read the books before, the icing on the cake has to be the smooth as sill voice of Stephen Fry narrating. This is something i can, and have, listened to over and over again.
