Publisher's Summary

But It’s Your Family is a remarkable account of what it means to cut ties to toxic family abuse and thrive in the aftermath.

Loving someone doesn’t always mean having a relationship with them, just like forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation. Reconciling, in many cases, only sets people up for more abuse. A significant part of healing comes with accepting that this is a part of life; there are some relationships that are so poisonous that they destroy one’s ability to be healthy and function best. Dr. Sherrie Campbell clarifies how parents, adult children, siblings, grandparents, and in-laws can be toxic while giving direction on how to explain cutting ties to children and others who may not understand. When listeners are able to bring closure to those toxic relationships, they give themselves the space to love those family members from a distance, as fellow human beings, with the knowledge that it is unwise to remain connected. In But It’s Your Family, listeners learn how to love themselves in the process and fundamentally change their lives for the better.

A true survivor.

impeccably delivered by the author who's story of bravery i found incredibly relatable in her tragic and unjust beginning for which she amazingly turned into a story of bravery, triumph and success.

Absolutely brilliant!

I have just finished listening to this book after finding Dr Sherrie's podcast and resinating with it profoundly. I have been no contact from members of my family for the second time for 5 years and counting. Before listening to this book at Dr Shrrie's podcast I was feeling very lost and even more alone and admittedly I was questioning if my family members were really toxic. This book confirmed it! It also confirmed so much more for me, bringing up memories long pushed down and allowing me to gain a sense of conviction because what Dr Sherrie shared about her own experience was very very similar to my own. She has a whole chapter on the biblical side of things too which I found extremely helpful because as a Christian woman I was truly struggling with potentially going against the commandment of Honour your mother and father. She talks about forgiveness and its relationship to going no contact and she references another book which I'd love to read specifically on going no contact for Christians. Through listening to this book, I have regained my confidence and my conviction that leaving that night to get my children to safety was the right thing to do, that yes I had been abused all of my life and that yes because I made a decision to go no contact again (after being hoovered back in via my husband - and Dr Sherrie talks about this too), I get to live my life the way it was intended and I can finally be me - whoever she is because I am yet to really truly discover her in full. Thankyou Dr Sherrie for writing such a wonderful, supportive book for all of us who are going through the trials of being in toxic relationships with family members and for validating us for our experiences because we wouldn't ever get this from family or even friends of family. I encourage those of you who are thinking of going no contact or have already gone no contact from family to either pick up and read a copy or listen to this book. It's the best book on this subject I have read. Dr Sherrie truly understands because she has lived it herself.

Insightful read for adults in Toxic Familiies

This is a eye opening book for adult children of toxic families.....I am at a place in my life where I have to questioning where I fit in my family. As I listened to this book....I realise I am the family scapegoat....It's not nice to now identify myself in this way. Society has accepted that you can marry these toxic people and leave them but what if they are our own biological family. You are not allowed to leave....Thank you for showing me the way.

A relief to hear others stories.

A very in-depth guide to cutting ties with toxic family members. Just a shame the therapist makes the mistake of including her opinions of how “god” wants her to live. If I wanted to hear about god then I would go to church (which I don’t). Otherwise very helpful, thank you.

Must read. Allow yourself to feel the rage

Anyone who grew up with a narcissistic parent should read this book or, even better, listen to the audiobook. Apart from all the useful insights, it allowed me to feel the rage that I stuffed down as a kid when faced with the injustice of being the family scapegoat. Feeling the rage and being angry at the right people instead of directing it all at myself, has been a huge step towards healing. Highly recommended.

My Own Story Was Told in this Book

This book has been an enormous relief to read because I found myself there, excavated, understood and explained. I need to keep rereading and allowing this information to seep into my bones and my psyche where it can take seed, grow and blossom. I am determined. I am already no contact with most of my family but I am still learning to recognise abuse. This book has explained so many why's and validated so many of my decisions.
