Allerdings war Cäsars britannische Expedition nicht bloß, wie seine Züge gegen die Germanen, ein defensiver Vorstoß gewesen. So weit sein Arm reichte, hatte er die einzelnen Völkerschaften reichsuntertänig gemacht und ihre Jahresabgabe an das Reich hier wie in Gallien geordnet.
Theodor Mommsen erhielt als erster Deutscher 1902 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
