Publisher's Summary

Scorio will rise from the ashes to conquer the 10 layers of hell.

Reborn without memories, Scorio learns that he is a Great Soul, a legendary defender of the ancient city of Bastion. That within the hallowed halls of the Academy and under the stern eyes of the underworld’s greatest instructors he will enjoy enormous privilege, rediscover unique and wondrous powers, and one day return to the millennium-old battle against their infernal foes.

Until he is betrayed. Singled out and sentenced to die for crimes he can't remember, Scorio is hurled to his doom - and forgotten.

But from even the dimmest spark an inferno may one day rage.

Clawing his way back from oblivion, Scorio vows to return to the Academy at any cost. To emerge from the ruins and within those golden walls defeat his elite classmates in a quest to ascend the ranks and change the course of history. For only then will he learn about his forgotten past and why his enemies have rightly feared him since the day he was reborn.

A worthwhile slog.

This story is what I imagine The Fellowship of the ring would feel like, if it was purely from Frodos perspective. Great world building if a bit linear, but a MC with a serious chip on his shoulder. If you can make it through it seems like a good story may unfold.

Worst part of this story is its main character

The world is really unique and interesting, the characters havn't really grown enough for the 'magic' to be decently explored but it has potential.

Unfortunately, this story suffers by being explored through the main characters eyes. He has been dealt a legitimately bad hand, is born into unfair circumstances in an unfair world, but then goes onto blame all his problems on that. It's always the circumstances, it's always someone else's fault, at no point does he sit down and acknowledge that he is impulsive and arrogant and his actions only dig him deeper. His friends occassionally call him out for being overconfident and self-destructive but never for being self-absorbed, and even if they did he'd only pretend to listen and then keep doing whatever he wants without any self-reflection. It's like the story wants to make it seem like he has it so rough, but always tosses him enough lucky opportunities/plot armour that he never really faces the consequences of his actions.

Just, yeah, I feel like this would be more enjoyable if I was actually on the main characters side instead of hoping that the world will slap him down so that he has a reason to grow up. It's a good story with a frustrating main character.

Offensively bad female voices

The female voices are so shockingly bad I nearly quit this title multiple times. Every time Nick Podehl went into his weird female voices, I'd get angry and feel like punching a wall. If they played his female voices in an armed conflict, it could be classified as a war crime. I hope they choose a different narrator for the next book.
The story itself was fine; it's your standard progression fantasy story - weak guy trains a lot and gets stronger.

not as good as i was hoping

well what is there to say it starts off interesting then 10+ plus hours of it being boring sometimes the MC seems like a caring thinking hard working young man other times he is an angry rebellious 16 teen year old who lashes out at anyone friend or foe at this point i have listen to 23 hours out of 38 and im calling it quits

Unlikeable characters, overly descriptive prose

This book has had a lot of recommendations so I thought it was a safe pick. I liked the narration and have no issues with the voices. The overly descriptive prose was just so much filler and the author has used some of the most uncommon adjectives to describe everything, it sounds almost pretentious. By the halfway point, the tension dropped and the motivations of the protagonist and his friends just got less and less interesting and more generic. Unfortunately, I have to give up at this point as it's hard to continue but I'm being unfair for leaving an unflattering review without having completed it. For all I know, the next half is where the best part is and where it earned its best reviews.
