Publisher's Summary

A town put to the sword. The young forcibly recruited. An old man out for revenge.

After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation.

Too corrupted to even take the first steps, the sly old elder simply agreed with those who told him that it was impossible. Then, he quietly ignored them, rubbed his hands together, and started anyway. He had always failed in what he did: He lost his way from the academy, his command was devastated by a mage, he lost his town, and now his last hopes for the future had been stolen by a group of raiders. The only thing that had never failed him was his sharp mind and philosophy. He would cultivate...no matter what it cost him.

A lifetime of failure can dull and dampen a soul. A reason to live, a goal, can change that in an instant. It is always darkest just before the dawn.

Good edition

Incredibly slow start however, the end has made me excited for the next instalment. Excellent edition to a well made universe.

Fantastic addition to the divine dungeon universe

This book has all the things I like, philosophy, well thought out and working systems of magic and detail (fleshed out in the divine dungeon series originally). and a focus/backstory of a much loved character in the aforementioned series. for the most part it's quite well written, especially compared to quite a few other novels in the genre, and just overall a fun journey. well worth picking up if you liked any of krout's other work. while you don't need to read the divine dungeon series first, I would say it'll give a lot more context on the magic system and how it works, allowing you to focus on the other more philosophical aspects of the book instead of the magic system.

Very well written!

I enjoyed it thoroughly, it was a little slow to start once I got into it I didn't want to stop and had grabbed the next book before I finished so I didn't have to wait.

awful.

I bought this because I like Travis, the reader. The book is just badly written with a weak storyline. i am annoyed that I wasted time and money.

A long slog

Sadly this is one of those books where they say a million words when one will do.

They draaaaaaaaaged it out to the point of being painful and went into so much detail that it became boring and I can’t tell you how many times I had to reply some chapters because it just didn’t hold my attention.

I totally regret investing in this book and the only saving grace was Travis who did an amazing job as always telling the story.

Starts strong, loses momentum

Good start to a book with likable enough characters, then gets bogged down with lots of chapters of detailed cultivation, before picking up again a bit near the end. Main problem with the book is the series it leads into is just very disappointing.
