Publisher's Summary

As a medical detective of the modern world, forensic pathologist Ryan Blumenthal’s chief goal is to bring perpetrators to justice. He has performed thousands of autopsies, which have helped bring numerous criminals to book.

In Autopsy he covers the hard lessons learnt as a rookie pathologist, as well as some of the most unusual cases he’s encountered. During his career, for example, he has dealt with high-profile deaths, mass disasters, death by lightning and people killed by African wildlife.

Blumenthal takes the listener behind the scenes at the mortuary, describing a typical autopsy and the instruments of the trade. He also shares a few trade secrets, like how to establish when a suicide is more likely to be a homicide.

Even though they cannot speak, the dead have a lot to say - and Blumenthal is there to listen.

Illuminating and fascinating

The book is written well with just the right amount of humour and horror. There are many areas of scientific explanation to satiate those interested in the pathology and enough beautiful humility and introspection for the general reader. The author even shares their rules to living a fulfilling life towards the end of the book. Generally a great book with a fantastic narrator.

Narcissism 101

Judgemental narcissist with no writing skills. Boring lists of tools etc with little story in between. Apart from the horrendous story of his condescension to patients in Bradford.

a little self-absorbed, but he gets there

I love books of this genre. I have enjoyed and read all of the works by Dr Richard Shepard, Professor Sue Black, and Caitlin Doughty. 'Autopsy' seemed an easy contender for my enjoyment and you know, it kept me entertained on a long road trip, but the attitude the author has - about his Miraculous work and the Extreme importance of his presence on any crime scene, the way he "uses his brain as his only weapon to bring JUSTICE (all caps)" because one time one of his friends hid his textbooks in highschool ...

The author's attitude aside, the later chapters of the book turn a little cultish with lines like (indirect quote), "Some people say [economically] that everyone should get an equal slice of the pie. Others believe that everyone should get as much pie as they need to feel full. *I* believe that the solution to this problem lies in Cyber Technology."
it's all downhill from there.

The draw of this book, the conversation around death and what we can learn from it, makes up a superficial amount of what is actually in this book. I skipped the penultimate chapter because it was a lecture on how to live my life by someone who has outed themselves as a medical practitioner unfit for practice with "moral quandaries" such as "if someone is mugged, and the mugger presents at the hospital at the same time, did you know you are mandated to treat the mugger???? outrageous!"

My skepticism only ever increased throughout the book. It did not leave me with any sense of respect for or curiosity in the author. I would not recommend it.
