Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Story
Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation.

Critic Reviews
"One hell of a novel about a good woman on the run with her beautiful boy." (Stephen King)
"I couldn't put it down. I'll never stop thinking about it." (Ann Patchett)
"It's been a long time since I turned pages as fast as I did with American Dirt. Its journey is a testament to the power of fear and hope and belief that there are more good people than bad." (John Grisham)

Enjoyable
This book took me a while to get into and I almost gave up, the start took off with a bang but then I found it fell flat, although I stuck with it and ended up not being able to stop listening. it is well written and had solid character stories.

Engrossing
Great narrator. Personal feeling narrative.
At times shocking but sadly factual regarding the brutality of the Mexican drug cartels.

Excellent
Makes me think the detractors of this book have something to gain from not having the spotlight shone on the migrant situation.

A must read/listen
I was glued to this book, the story grabs you from the very start and holds your attention the entire way through. A tragic but beautiful story of struggle and resilience. I found the narrator's voice and tone very easy to listen to. Would definitely recommend.

Great storyline, fantastic characters, excellent narration
I was right there with the characters on this journey. I was on edge at times and could feel my pulse racing. I was so invested in the characters I was disappointed when it ended. I hope there will be a another novel following the next steps in there lives. The narration was fantastic.
