His requirements are precise: she must be capable of mothering the wild twin daughters who have unexpectedly appeared in his life, and so must possess the patience of a saint and the understanding of an angel. Better still if she is plain and has no expectation of a true marriage. He is not about to reform his ways.

After Emma accidentally kills her uncle, she's saved by James Killoran, a dissolute dark lord bent on retribution. After her rescue, he decides that she's the perfect instrument to enact his revenge. He just never envisioned that he would fall in love with her.
Publisher's Summary
James de Vere has always insisted on being perfectly pragmatic and rational in all things. It seemed the only way to deal with his overdramatic, greedy family. When he falls ill and no doctor in London can diagnose him, he returns home to Grace Hill in search of a physician who can - or to set his affairs in order.
Arriving at the doctor's home, he's surprised to encounter the doctor's daughter Laura, a young woman he last saw when he was warning her off an attachment with his cousin Graeme. Alas, the doctor is recently deceased and Laura is closing up the estate, which must be sold off, leaving her penniless. At this, James has an inspiration: why not marry the damsel in distress? If his last hope for a cure is gone, at least he'll have some companionship in his final days, and she'll inherit his fortune instead of his grasping relatives, leaving her a wealthy widow with plenty of prospects.
Laura is far from swept off her feet, but she's as pragmatic as James, so she accepts his unusual proposal. But as the two of them brave the onslaught of shocked and suspicious family members, they find themselves growing closer. They vowed, "until death do us part"...but now both are longing for their marriage to be more than momentary in this evocative romance.

Enjoyable rubbish
It says a lot for Gildart Jackson’s voice acting that this was an enjoyable listen. If I’d been reading it to myself I doubt I’d have got through the first chapter - most American authors can’t write English historical romance for peanuts. All the dialogue is wrong, the slang is wrong, interactions between servants and “gentry” are wrong, interactions between parents and children are wrong. But Gildart Jackson is so good to listen to that you mostly don’t notice - he even managed the OTT sex scenes without showing amusement in his voice.

Dry wit and clever dialogue delivered to perfection.
Wow. What a premise. I was hooked from the start. I loved James & Laura and enjoyed their journey from dislike to caring to love. Again, Candace assembles a diverse bunch of characters and weaves their personalities and backstories into a clever tale of “who (almost) dunnit?”. I enjoyed the writing immensely and thought the narrator’s performance stellar. Am looking forward to discovering more by both author and narrator.

I loved the premise of this story but my favourite part was actually the witty banter between the two protagonists. I would love to be their friends!
