Best Thrillers of 2022

She thought the murders had stopped. She was wrong.

The instant New York Times bestseller, soon to be a major TV series, developed by Emma Stone

Chloe Davis’ father is a serial killer.

He was convicted and jailed when she was 12, but the bodies of the girls were never found, seemingly lost in the surrounding Louisiana swamps. The case became notorious, and Chloe’s family was destroyed.

His crimes stalk her like a shadow.

Now Chloe has rebuilt her life. She’s a respected psychologist in Baton Rouge and has a loving fiancé. But she just can’t shake a tick-tick-tick of paranoia that, at any moment, it might all come crashing down.

As does something darker.

It is the anniversary of her father’s crimes, and Chloe is about to see her worst fears come true—a girl she knows goes missing.

The nightmare has started again....

Critic Reviews

"A smart, edge-of-your-seat story with plot twists you’ll never see coming. Stacy Willingham’s debut will keep you turning pages long past your bedtime." (Karin Slaughter, Sunday Times best-selling author)

"An impressive debut - full of switchback twists." (Cara Hunter, author of the Sunday Times best-selling DI Fawley series)

"Haunting, lyrical and utterly compelling! These are just a few of the words of praise one could use to describe A Flicker in the Dark. Author Willingham takes us on an unstoppable journey through the psychology of evil, and of courage (in many senses), all told in a pitch-perfect literary style. Once you start reading, you will not put it down." (Jeffery Deaver, author of the Sunday Times best-selling Lincoln Rhyme and Colter Shaw series)

Just okay, good twist at very end

I found the vocals to be okay, too slow so I just turned speed up. The story itself isn’t what I expected until the last 1/4 of book - the “thriller” part is too slow and it’s more of a story about her childhood trauma of her dad being a serial killer.

This book was excellent!

I read this as I saw it recommended a lot and it did not disappoint!!! Brilliant narration, as always by Karissa. The story was great, enough detail and twists to keep you going the whole way. Great read!

meh

Decent plot ruined by: a main character who was a bit too insipid too often, overexplaining, overacted torturous narration...

Great crime novel

Had my suspicions throughout. Love how it all came together in the end. Great voice actor too. Would recommend

Crime, drama and tangents!

The author goes off on annoying tangents. Telling the reader things they have already read several times. The story is good, but the main character is a bit annoying.

Good read

Thought the book was good, some great parts, some that dragged a little. The ending was definitely worth it. I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen and I didn’t!!

You will never know who did it

I usually can pick who the killer is but in this book I couldn’t. I was suspecting from everyone. Everyone had a motif. Amazing book. Cant wait how the tv series are adapted but I doubt as any other book it be as good as the real one

Overacted narration and a predictable twist

Overall the book was fine, a good airport read, nothing too strenuous. The frustration for me was the whispered and over acted narration and the TERRIBLE male voices. Think Amanda Seyfried being Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. That's all I could think of, and it was very distracting. The "twist" was predictable and the execution was clumsy but a good premise and a good first effort by the author. Not bad, not great, just an okay read.
