Story
Anna Karenina seems to have everything - beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son. But she feels that her life is empty until the moment she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky. Their subsequent affair scandalizes society and family alike and soon brings jealously and bitterness in its wake. Contrasting with this tale of love and self-destruction is the vividly observed story of Levin, a man striving to find contentment and a meaning to his life - and also a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself.

Story
The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky's dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.

Story
Ulysses is regarded by many as the single most important novel of the 20th century. It tells the story of one day in Dublin, June 16th 1904, largely through the eyes of Stephen Dedalus (Joyce's alter ego from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, an advertising salesman. Both begin a normal day, and both set off on a journey around the streets of Dublin, which eventually brings them into contact with one another.

Story
Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

Story
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

The most influential work of the entire Spanish literary canon and a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote is also one of the greatest works ever written. Hugely entertaining but also moving at times, this episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha. Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself ‘Don Quixote’ and with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests.

Story
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

Listening lets you appreciate anew the incredible beauty of Proust’s language and the uniqueness of his style. The novel’s narrator, Marcel, finds the true meaning of experience in memories stimulated by some random object or event.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
This Penguin Classic is performed by Chloe Pirrie, Sam Woolf, Michael Fox, Olivia Darnley and Terence Wilton.
At a glittering society party in St Petersburg in 1805, conversations are dominated by the prospect of war. Terror swiftly engulfs the country as Napoleon's army marches on Russia and the lives of three young people are changed forever. The stories of quixotic Pierre, cynical Andrey and impetuous Natasha interweave with a huge cast, from aristocrats and peasants, to soldiers and Napoleon himself.
In War and Peace (1868-69), Tolstoy entwines grand themes - conflict and love, birth and death, free will and fate - with unforgettable scenes of 19th-century Russia, to create a magnificent epic of human life in all its imperfection and grandeur.

Not enough superlatives to describe how good this is
The biggest, most epic tale ever assembled. I feel my life is better for having listened to this. I loved the multiple narrators and the pace and relevance of the translation. However, the story itself is so vast, so deep, so human — I laughed, I cried and felt more alive than at any point in my life. Can’t recommend this enough.

This audiobook is the only reason I finished
Anyone who manages to make this tome into an audiobook should be applauded, no matter what. Each of the 5 narrators is clear and consistent.
However, publishers should note that in volume 3 part 1 there are some editing mistakes - quite a few times in this section lines are repeated. It happens more than 10 times, sometimes a few within a single chapter.

Intertwining social narrative
A society novel, a family story, a coming of age story, a historical chronicle, and a mighty epic spanning 15 years from 1805 to 1850. This novel explores the meaning of happiness and the many turns life can take with the choices we make. That our experiences are what make us who we are. Therefore, the strength in War and Peace is in the weakness of its characters, who are not guaranteed happy endings.
It has humour, spirituality, despair, and many intertwining stories that had me completely invested in the outcome. I would recommend the reader research the different translations available as this can impact how enjoyable the text is. I read the Anthony Briggs translation as it is a combination between a literal translation and dynamic translation.
The narrators were different across the different parts of the novel.

I loved this story. Obviously the lives and loves of the families was more appealing than the battle scenes but even they were not too brutal until the retreat . this was a welcome change to radio listening while working.

Interesting, but not the greatest Novel written
I will probably be criticised as a Philistine but wouldn’t have through this without the audio version. The interminable love chapters, the anguishing and the twists and terms of emotions drove me crazy. The Epilogue explains much of what the novel- whatever you call it- is about is great. The production was ok, but why switch from male to female narrators escapes me. I did it, but I don’t think that I am a great fan of the 19th century Russian novelist. Give me A Suitable Boy any day if you want to read a magnum opus. Next I have Stalingrad by Vasily Grossman; am I up to it? Surely it can’t be as turgid as War and Peace?!!’ One positive outcome was the lowering of my estimation of Napoleon as a great leader or general. I never have understood why Churchill thought so highly of him.
