Story
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

Story
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Few books have had such an impact as Wild Swans: a popular best seller and a critically acclaimed history of China that opened up the country to the world. Through the story of three generations of women in her own family - the grandmother given to the warlord as a concubine, the Communist mother, and the daughter herself - Jung Chang reveals the epic history of China's twentieth century. Breathtaking in its scope, unforgettable in its descriptions, this is a masterpiece that is extraordinary in every way.

Publisher's Summary
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.
Dorothea Brooke is an outstanding heroine; Middlemarch is filled with characters that are vivid and true, comic and moving. It is one of the greatest novels in the English language.

Wonderful. An excellent book, excellently read.
Middlemarch teaches us that other people have interior lives as rich and complex as our own, which is an infinitely valuable lesson for us, and a demonstration of rare insight on the author's part. It is a long and sometimes difficult book, but will doubtless remain with the reader long after its completion. Stevenson's reading is ideally suited to the text, elevating and animating it in the listener's mind. The product is a rare accomplishment in the art of storytelling.

A portrayal of a highly regulated society.
The book follows several famlies of differing stance in rural England during the early 1820's.
Eliot explors the social graces, customs between the single & married, as well as interconnections, attitudes of family & neighbours.
While the narators reading was impecable, character voices were mostly indecipherable, concentration was a must to keep up.

Outstanding in every respect
I first read Middlemarch when I was in my late teens, and in the intervening 50 or so years I have read it at least once each decade - perhaps more. I wondered if I knew it almost too well to enjoy it as an audiobook. Instead, I have been transfixed by Juliet Stevenson’s beautifully judged reading, which helped me navigate the denser passages of Eliot’s prose and seemed to envelop all the narrative threads in a keen and compassionate understanding. This is such an inclusive work, concerned with all strata of Middlemarch society, different political stances, all stages of life - even gender politics gets a look in. As always I was floored by Eliot’s insight into what can go awry in a marriage and how we (or most of us) must accommodate the loss of our early aspirations. Listening to this reading, I was also struck by how much she has to say about friendship - about looking out for each other. And I have never wept as much as I have this time around. What a novel! Highly recommended.

A masterpiece brought to life
I'm presently listening to this beautiful reading of Middlemarch for the third time, having listened to some chapters many more times than that just to savour them. The beauty, humour, poignancy and humanity of George Eliot's wonderful novel is brought to life brilliantly by Juliet Stevenson's reading. She makes every character real and distinct, and voices the narrator perfectly.
