Story
Jane Austen’s most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Mr. Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters. This marvelous account of family life in Regency England is read with customary panache by Juliet Stevenson.

These three short works show Austen experimenting with a variety of different literary styles, from melodrama to satire, and exploring a range of social classes and settings. The early epistolary novel Lady Susan depicts an unscrupulous coquette toying with the affections of several men. In contrast, The Watsons is a delightful fragment whose spirited heroine, Emma Watson, finds her marriage opportunities limited by poverty and pride....

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Story
When her father leaves the Church, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the North of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice. In North and South Gaskell skillfully fused individual feeling with social concern and in Margaret Hale created one of the most original heroines of Victorian literature.

Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

In a remote corner of early Victorian England, where traditional practices remain untouched by time, Bathsheba Everdene stands out as a beacon of female independence and self-reliance. However, when confronted with three suitors, among them the dashing Sergeant Troy, she shows a reckless capriciousness that threatens the stability of the whole community. The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. Persuasion is my absolute favourite Austen novel. I’ve read it so many time, but was reluctant to listen to it in case it wasn’t performed as well as it is in my head. Juliet Stevenson truly does this justice. It’s a wonderful telling and I definitely recommend it.

Umpteenth re-listen and still love it.
I love Anne Elliot’s interiority in this book - so much is not said and the suspense is in the reticence of Anne and resentment of wentworth. Once again JA conducts an orchestra of quirky and finely drawn characters.

It's Jane Austen
When you buy an audiobook of a Jane Austen novel, you know what you are getting so it all comes down to the reader as to how great your enjoyment is going to be. Juliet Stevenson is the best reader of Jane Austen I have heard. The language can sound stilted or arch with other readers but Juliet sounds very natural.

I loved this story
So beautiful and delicious to read. Made me smile. I felt like had met the characters. It's so interesting to see people be written in this manner.
You are told of each characters personality in the beginning and then all the characters are thrown into the world for you to observe. How will someone with this personality interact with the world? So human, I could see the foolishness of people within myself. What happens when you are vain? Too easily manipulated by appearances? Or foolish enough to never doubt your own judgement without further examination. So human. And the romance squeezed my heart. As someone who has never fallen in love so strongly, I could feel the affection of Anne like I too was in love.
