Story
At the very end of the Ladies’ Frocks Departments, past Cocktail Frocks, there was something very special, something quite, quite wonderful; but it wasn’t for everybody: that was the point. Because there, at the very end, there was a lovely arch, on which was written in curly letters Model Gowns. Written by a superb novelist of contemporary manners, Ladies in Black is a fairytale which illuminates the extraordinariness of ordinary lives. The women in black are run off their feet, what with the Christmas rush and the summer sales that follow.

Story
It’s 2006, and terror scaremongering in the media has rattled the residents of sleepy, suburban Dunlop Crescent. When a Maori family moves into number 14, the local cranks assume they are Middle Eastern terrorists hell-bent on destroying the Australian way of life. Rumour has it that they plan to turn their house to face Mecca. This sets off an extraordinary chain of events that embroils the entire neighbourhood as well as cynical media figures, bumbling antiterrorist police and a gang of white supremacists with a radical plan to wake up the country and ‘preserve Australian values’.

Great Narrator
I really enjoyed this book. It was very easy to read with simple but adequate descriptions. The storyline is something you can leave for a while and still understand when you pick it back up. There are a lot of different POV and time shifts in this book which added to the readers understanding of charecter motivations. I feel these POV's was smoother when listening to the book then when I just read it. I enjoyed the escapism, especially the different accents, of this novel very much.

Enthralling and unmissable
Lucy goes from strength to strength. Have loved all her books and this intriguing story works very well as an audio book. Effective narration and quite cinematic in the description. Provides a vivid picture of the city and characters, but the focus on the apartment building as a character in itself really brings it to life. Loved the twist and turns. Would make a thrilling miniseries on TV. A must-listen!
