Story
Lindisfarne, AD 793. There had been portents - famine, whirlwinds, lightning from clear skies, serpents seen flying through the air. But when the raiders came, no one was prepared. They came from the North, their dragon-prowed longships gliding out of the dawn mist as they descended on the kingdom's most sacred site. It is 8th June AD 793, and with the pillage of the monastery on Lindisfarne, the Viking Age has begun. While his fellow monks flee before the Norse onslaught, one young novice stands his ground.

a MUST buy.
Enjoyed Harffy's earlier series but it ran out of puff for me (sorry) and I returned book 6. I thoroughly enjoyed the series but like a lot of good things....a little formulaic and I tired of it.
This new book and setting is fresh and new. A different tangent to most "warrior stuff" as its hero is a senior cit...but this doesn't detract one iota, it enhances the reality of life off the grid.
The author is a painter of words, his description and clear love of the times is first rate. It felt as if I was there. His numerous historical asides, behaviours, beliefs and then legal systems is utterly absorbing.
The forest lore and deep love Duncan has for his world is warm and uplifting. A joy to read/listen to and become involved.
The narrator is sublime. Perfect, a great yet unintrusive story teller.

Just no
I've tried... First I tried to like it or just stick with it, then I have adjusted the speed to 1.3... Then I started skipping chapters....
Many many flows and outright negatives to this book, but for me... SLOW!!!!
If this book was any slower it would have been going backwards, just like the main characters of the book and the plot was just dreadful, dreadfully filled with nothing.

Poodle of Pulp Fiction
I usually only write a review if I love a book - or find it underwhelming. Guess which one Wolf of Wessex was?
If you like your characters and your plotline two-dimensional, this may be the book for you. Barnaby Edwards contributes by making most of the characters sound either pathetic, guileless or ignorant. Women are especially blessed by Harffy and Edwards, who manage to present them as needy, silly and entirely dependent. There is not a skerrick of originality or inventiveness in the plot, which lumbers along the wheel-ruts of the genre to it's inevitable conclusion.
I kept hoping that - around the next bend - there might be light. Nope.
Many have liked it so....take your chances. But if you're looking for anything remotely reminiscent of Cornwall and Keeble, forget it.
